In all your time in Anatole, be it long or short, you don’t think that you’ve ever seen the greenhouses so beautiful.
Maybe it’s the green of the plants, the vibrancy of color against the fogged glass, heat close at bay and the chill so cruelly shunned. Maybe it’s the smell of fresh muffins set upon tables that had been painstakingly addressed and set up with conscious care. Maybe it’s the crimson bows tied to the backs of each chair, or the candles lining the small, slightly lopsided stage, or the hand-colored banner stretching across the ceiling, stating the obvious: Charity Dating Auction.
Or maybe, just maybe, it’s the smile on so many faces, grins and delight that consume not only lips, but eyes, too.
Zack stared from a corner, smiling as he counted down the minutes, watching the people file in, faces he knew, faces he didn’t. It was a success, or was going to be, and there was a simmering sense of pride, a feeling of a job well done, of a good idea coming to fruition. And, he just knew that this feeling was going to be utterly dwarfed by the one he was going to have when he handed Dawn the proceeds from this.
A few minutes now. Just a few, and he munched on a random muffin he had snuck off the table. He could feel the cue cards in his pockets, hoped he had them all in order, and grew excited. There. Elena. Angeal. Jason. Dawn. Spike. Irene. Just to name a few. The volunteers were finally showing up, and that meant…
