It would take her exactly twenty-three days to make up for ten missed days. She could almost calculate it down to the minute. Elena's life was mapped out for months in advance, carefully inked across lines of notebook paper, dates to the side, notes at the bottom. She'd decided to stick to that schedule and squeeze in those ten skipped pages one line at a time. Twenty-three days. That's all the time it would take to get her life back.

...Twenty-four days. Because Elena couldn't look at those notebook pages today. Each time she tried, the ink ended up smeared.

She isn't exactly sure what brought her here, of all places. She's never even been here before, which is a little odd considering how many job opportunities there were in Greenhouse Row. Maybe it was the nature of the work. Farming required a certain amount of nurturing and patience, neither of which she thinks she has. But stepping inside one of the many greenhouses still makes her a little curious. Everything's so...green.

And warm. Elena takes her jacket off and drapes it over her arm as she steps deeper in. She pauses in front of an apple tree, bright fruit on strong branches that lift towards the glass ceiling. It almost looks like it's surrendering.

Without thinking, she reaches up and picks one of the apples. It looks beautiful. It smells sweet Naturally, it's only after she's taken a bite that Elena notices the wormhole.

She pulls her arm back and throws the fruit as hard as she can. Hopefully it doesn't shatter any of the panes of glass or bring the whole place crashing down around her. But really, she wouldn't be surprised if it did.

Rebuilding a greenhouse might be tricky...but she'd almost welcome the distraction.
