[...Oh hey. He hasn't talked to you in awhile, apart from the auction.

And he could respond in text, but it's just that Kaien isn't all that great at typing (he can do it, it's just not very efficient), and he prefers face-to-face interaction anyway. Especially since it's possible even on the Forge.]

Mm? Sure, what's up?

[Oh, why not. Especially since this is a serious question, and the last time they'd talked on the Forge William had been rude enough to give Kaien a view of a table for the whole time.

He looks slightly uncomfortable, but is nevertheless determined to keep his composure.]

Forgive me if this is inappropriate, but...what exactly do people do on dates?

[You are really the only person he can ask about this.]

[Blinking once, then twice, and then a gentle smile.]

It's not a problem at all. This is for the date auction, right?

[And despite doing his best to keep his expression neutral and nonthreatening, he can't help the knowing spark in his eyes that tries to form a smirk. No heart, huh, William?]

...Well, I guess the first question is if you're hoping for a second date, or if it's just...spending time with a friend with added charity money.

[WHICH BY THE WAY, BETTER BE WHAT THEIR 'DATE' IS MEANT TO BE. BECAUSE OTHERWISE THINGS WILL GET AWKWARD FAST.]

Remember when I asked who you are, aside from being a shinigami? That's where you start. Talk about yourself, find things in common or something you'd like to do together.

[He'd suggest bringing a present or flowers, but he's talked to that woman you bid on and doubts she'd appreciate them >.>;]

don't worry about it! byronicreaper December 19 2011, 03:37:17 UTC
I...don't know her, so I cannot say whether it is simply spending time or whether there are any hopes. Aside from me merely wishing that I might get to know her. Hopefully speaking with her and not embarrassing myself in the process.

[...so you have a crush. that's so. precious. c: Kaien really has to put in an effort now not to give William a grin of the sort he might have given his own younger brother someday, if he'd lived.]

[A chuckle.]

Well, either way it doesn't matter too much. Relationships of that kind start with friendship, anyway. If you want to get to know her, ask her questions and listen to the answers. And like I said, talk about yourself and try to find common ground.

[He pauses. Based on what you'd told him before, he might need to be a little more specific.]

Things you enjoy doing when you're not working. And things that make you happy to think about.

But...

[You know what? He gives up on the conversation right now.]

It might be more effective if we talk in person. I work at the library most afternoons.

[As he does the next afternoon, privately hoping Kaien does not come and that a Mist beast will burst through the wall and strike him down now so the awkwardness he feels will dissipate.]

action! \o/ ...I was gonna use the other keywords, but these amuse me more heartbetween December 19 2011, 04:34:28 UTC
I guess I'll see you then. [...he can't resist the smirk, that time, before he disconnects.]

[And oh, he will be there. Because your awkwardness is actually kind of adorable and Kaien may not have the most experience with dating (apart from Miyako), but he knows well about talking to people. Making connections, friends. And from that one conversation, he does remember your loneliness. Even if it's something William wouldn't admit to himself.

He arrives in the library the next day around lunchtime, asking around for the man and approaching him with a friendly wave.]

Hey.

[And in utter defiance of William's wishes, the universe sees fit to send Kaien his way. Joy.

He puts the stack of books he was dealing with on the cart before turning to him.]

I'm glad you decided to show up.

[Truth, after a fashion. Despite his dreading of the whole event, perhaps it wouldn't be that bad. It wasn't as though this could be as bad as he imagined, right?]

I wouldn't miss it. We do have a 'date,' after all.

[Grinning, a little cheekily. Because he has decided to adopt a new tactic at this.]

So, the library, huh? You been working here long?

[Just. Go with it, William, he knows what he's doing. >.>]

For about four months, give or take. Ever since I came back to Anatole.

[That was a terrible pun and you know it, Kaien. But he'll go with it as it seems less awkward than the alternative.]

[THE TERRIBLE PUN GOES RIGHT OVER KAIEN'S HEAD. Moving on!]

Do you like it here?

[Which 'here' he means is up to you.]

It's not terrible, by any stretch of the imagination. Quiet, clean, orderly, familiar to back home. Though there are some extremely annoying situations that can crop up, they're few and far between.
