[The Forge turns on to show one Renly Baratheon in some fabulous new clothes. He has taken note of the fashions in Anatole, and is determined to be as in line with them as he possibly can, because -- well, pretty clothes. He clears his throat a tad and directs a smile at the camera.]As many of you can no doubt see, I've gained a new wardrobe. ( Read more... )

[ Stannis, meanwhile had chosen a plain suit to wear for the time being. ]

If you spent half as much time with a sword as you do on finery, you might actually be passable in combat.

[ It really was strange how easy it was to slip back into old habits with both Robert and Renly. At times, it was almost enough to shove actual thoughts of Westros to the back of his mind. ]

Clothes make just as much of an impression as a sword does, brother.

[He frowns a little at Stannis' suit, but -- it is passable, at least, if a bit boring for his tastes.]

And are you going to look for, ah, employment?

At the very least, a man should be able to defend himself. It is rather difficult to make an impression if one is... gravely injured.

[ He ignores that frown. It is more than acceptable, and practicality is far more important. ]

I imagine so. [ and... another consideration. ] You neglected to mention your position as Master of Laws on Robert's Small Council.

I am able to defend myself. [Not well, but he tries.]

Indeed. I do not think it would hold much stature, here.

You were never any match for Robert or even myself. [ and with this talk of monsters... ]

I would think it would demonstrate that you have some sort of experience, rather than merely being completely idle.

[ Even if all he did was jape with Littlefinger. ]

[There's an annoyed noise.] And you were never a match for Robert, what of it?

I would change it, then, but this --device is difficult at the best of times.

[It's not his fault Littlefinger makes good jokes.]

I am more than aware of my own skills in comparaison to Robert's. However, I am still proficient enough. Which is more than I can say for you.

[ he nods. ]

I mislike them also, but they are more useful than ravens in such a place. Mention it at the very least when you see potential... employers.

[ The last word is said with hesitation. ]

Loras tried to help me, but -- I never really caught on.

[A nod.]

I shall. What sort of ..ah, employment do you have in mind?

[ he frowns slightly at the mention of the Tyrell knight. ]

I imagine that you may do better with an instructor that does not distract you in the manner that Ser Loras did.

[ You know what he means. ]

For you or myself? In either case, it must be a position that generates a moderate level of income.

[ To support our elder brother may or may not be implied in there. ]

That is assuming I wish to practice swordplay.

I meant for yourself, I would seem to have a few suggestions already.

Do you have another suggestion on how to defend yourself?

[ And for a moment a hint of uncertainly passes over Stannis's face. Do what you will.

How does a man function when he is enitrely free of duty? ]

I remain somewhat unsure. The Lord Comm- [ ...correction ] Lord Stark's bastard suggested the Patrol. I said I would assist them if the need arises. [ Though truth be told, it does not particularly appeal to him. ]

There are other ways, I'm certain.

[But he makes a face, all the same. Combat is necessary, yes, but he's never actually liked it.]

Ah. Well, I'm sure you will find something to suit you, soon enough.

[ he responds to that face in his usual manner: with a piercing glare. ]

Then you would do well to learn at least one of them.

I imagine so. [ another long pause. ] Perhaps something to do with ships.

I intend to. [...Maybe.]

Ships? I did not know you had a fondness for them. [And then a teasing grin.] Shall you become a pirate?

Do not make me see to it that you do so. [ Because you may not like the way he goes about doing so. ]

I was Master of Ships for years. I have more than a passing fondness for them. [ he cleches his jaw. truly, it was nearly like old times. ] Perhaps you should consider a position as a fool if you are so fond of pointless japes.

I rather thought that we were past that. [Sigh. Come on, big bro.]

I do not think there is much place for a fool in this city.
