I think in some cases, it's a fear of losing one's self. That by "giving in", you lose everything you are and become something far worse.

The thing you despise.

Some of us choose not to abandon our humanity in favor of the surge of power attained. Is it genuinely worth the risks? To give in when the result is something you can never turn back from?

You'd be better off asking a human that.

I take it you aren't one of them?

A human would tell me that it isn't... because were I to do so, they would become food.

[... WTF SHE SHOULDN'T BE CONTEMPLATING THIS!]

...yet at the same time, I may be better capable to stand against Isley.

Hardly.

... I'm not familiar with him. Is he that much of a threat?

[distracted, hopelessly distracted]

To you? Probably not. To me? Only if he grows bored enough. To my pet? Absolutely.

[Poor Raphael, she is oblivious to your plight, but that's okay since she also probably looks about 14-16ish, and her only real association with men was her handler and the occasional Awakened.]

My-- ah, your pet? Isn't that a bit petty of him?

Actually... she might have eaten him once. I'm not entirely sure.

.... Now what exactly is your pet, Miss...?

She's an Abyss Feeder.

[And a switch to Video, the forge turning toward a cage... and the thing inside]

Her name is Stitchy.

[... Dietrich, you have inadvertently helped his plight immensely.]

....

Where did you get a thing like that? It looks like a demon.

[Poor Raphael!]

I put a piece of paper in a box and a few days later, she showed up at the door in a cage.

...

It's rather funny you would say that. She is, to an extent. She's the result of fusing a human with an Awakened Being... which is the result of a combination of human and yoma that, when releasing their yoki, overdo it and are incapable of returning to their normal state, thus losing their humanity.

[No this is a good thing.]

You requested her?

[Sounds like an aberration.] That wasn't willing on her part, was it?

Only to show Priscilla, as she had never seen one before.

It wasn't willing on the part of any of us that I know of. There is always an exception, but I can't think of any who would wish this life for themselves

I hope she stays caged.

That's... that's quite unfortunate.
