[Bap. Bap. Whap. The Forge is turned on apparently by a swatting white paw which continues to slap the lens around for another moment before the animal beating up the Forge retreats, apparently to regroup. She’s a very young black and white cat, still a kitten really, and she hunkers down a foot or so away from the Forge, staring it down ( Read more... )

She's cute. Does she always attack the Forge?

Thank you.

[Not far from the Forge's speaker comes a little kitty voice saying "mere."]

She hasn't done it before. But sometimes the oddest things interest her.

Did you get her here?

[She laughs a little, and when she speaks there is mirth in her voice.]

No, she came along with me. Though I'm sure my department chair will give me a lecture about stealing cats when I do bring her back.

Or I should say another lecture.

The history department at Balliol College. I'm a graduate student there, and a historian.

Technically Penwiper is their cat. Theirs, and Oxford's cloning facility. But I really didn't mean to steal her this time.

I didn't know the Door could bring animals from home through with you. [ A pause. ] You stole her once before?

Only a little!

[As if you can steal a thing in varying amounts.]

I sneaked her out of the box during the consecration of the cathedral. I didn't expect to be sent to another world with her, too.

But it was really stealing her mother that caused the whole mess. Well, not stealing so much as rescuing. She was drowning and I pulled her out of the river. I didn't really think about he consequences.

Why would there be bad consequences from rescuing a mother cat?

Well, it was more where I brought her after I rescued her that was the problem. I took her somewhere I shouldn't and it nearly caused a disaster.

[ Normally Freya isn't this chatty, but she's quite curious about how rescuing a mother cat could nearly cause a disaster. ]

I don't understand. Where did you take her that it would cause something so serious?

Where I come from, cats are extinct. Technically I shouldn't have even been able to bring her home.

It all turned out all right in the end, though. Her kittens have reintroduced the species to my world.

That's sad - do you know how they went extinct? Or would have gone, if there are kittens in your world again now.

There was a sickness, a pandemic, on my world. Cats were susceptible to a strain of it and we couldn't find a cure in time. It was years ago, before I was born. We never thought we'd be able to get them back. But we got lucky.

That's terrible.

It's good that they were able to repopulate your world. It must be nice to have something from your world. It's easier that way, right?

It is a bit easier having her here with me. She's like a little piece of the places I should be.
