It's too quiet around here. What, has 'fun' became a dirty word or something?

[Helen's pretty sure she can come up with some worse ones.I guess it's to be expected when it's the big mouths and the nice guys who disappear. Oh, that reminds me...Rin! Glad you came back out of the woodwork, kid ( Read more... )

String, ing. String thing?

[This is not just fun to repeat, it is also relevant to Ax's research into things that have occurred in the city in the past.]

Yeah. People who woke up with a string on their finger got tugged to their 'match'. Ever been on a blind date?

Blin, ind, date? That does not sound pleasant.

...You do know that you don't really have to be blind, right?

[He did not think that, why would you--

All right, he completely thought that.]

I have not participated, pay-teh-duh in any courting-ing rituals at all.

Have you been drinking, kid? It's a little early, even for me.

But hey, maybe you'll get lucky here. What's your type?

Drinking-ing what? I know the difference between beverages and con, con-dih-ment-suh. [This is a relatively new development.]

Type? Tie-puh? I do not know what this means.

Sounds like you haven't been drinking any of the good stuff.

It means the kind of person that you like! Long hair, short hair, blue eyes, green eyes...silver eyes. That sort of thing.

My brother told me I was not allowed, lou-duh, to drink motor oil anymore. [A bit sulkily. That counts as 'the good stuff' in Ax's book.]

I like all sorts of people. My best friend is a hawk.

[voice] applelimber July 10 2011, 22:30:56 UTC
Yeah, I wouldn't recommend drinking any kind of oil.

[She thinks about his next statement, debates pointing out that a hawk isn't a person.

Insofar as she knows.

But hey, it suggests that he doesn't discriminate, and that's good enough for Helen.]

How old are you, kid?

[voice] moarnomsplz July 11 2011, 04:32:45 UTC
But it is very tay, tasty.

I am fifteen human years old.

[No, he does not see anything odd in that phrasing.]

...Well, I guess if it didn't kill ya the first time...

Tell ya what. How would you like a beer?

[Wow, contribute to a delinquency of a minor a little more there, Helen.]

By the way, I'm Helen.

Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthill! Don't you even think about it. No motor oil, and no beer.

[ Even though it's audio, he's sure you can hear him linefacing. >| ]

And you! Cease your efforts to turn my brother into some sort of delinquent, if you don't mind.

[ He doesn't give a damn if you mind. STOP THAT. ]

[That is an impressive impressive lineface that she hears. And Helen knows a thing or two about them, been particularly close to the queen of them.]

Oh, so bro's here, huh. This should be fun. What if I turn you both into delinquents? You could say it runs in the family.

[Ax is impressed that Elfangor managed to say his entire name with human mouthparts, something Ax himself cannot reliably do, but only for a moment, before he performs the wince he believes is instinctive to all species at hearing one's full name in that tone of voice.]

I would not become a delinquent! Dee, dee-leen-kwint. I have been on-- on my own for many Earth weeks now, and have not become diss, dissolute. [Yes, he is sulking a little.]

Is it nice to meet you, Helen, [he says, somewhat stiffly, more for his brother's benefit than the human's.] You know my name now, but I prefer Ax.

[And then he makes it private to Helen, and sounds much less stiff.]

I do not think my brother is susceptible, tih-bull, to such things, ingz. Is beer delicious?

You know what, I kind of prefer Ax too.

Well, my kind isn't technically susceptible either. But we all need a little fun in our lives from time to time.

[Or something to keep their minds off of other things.]

Sure it is! Especially with some pork. Or...whatever else I've got to throw on the grill.
