02. [Broadcast Mind | because he needs a jumpstart] [Backdated to a little bit ago]

[It’s bright, sunny, clear... though there is no sky, only the vast expanse of what looks like an upside down world above you. The colony’s ‘ceiling’ is the puffy white clouds that float between the halves. An enclosed world, much like a snow globe.

A military base sits amidst a large field, surrounded by a high wire fence. It’s meant to keep the common folk out, but it doesn’t stop the rather scrawny-looking tanktop and spandex-clad boy from jumping over it as though it’s not much more than a branch in the road. He hits the ground running and crosses the field until he’s a good distance from the base, then somersaults onto his back to catch his breath and watch the sky.

The view is broken, however, by the face of a little girl as she leans over him, her puppy in tow.]

Are you lost?

[He doesn’t reply, but instead sits up to face the girl.]

I said, are you lost?

...I’ve been lost ever since I was born.

Oh, that’s so sad. [She kneels down to pet her puppy] Well, I’m not lost. I’m taking Mary out for a walk. [The puppy licks her face and she giggles... then extends her hand holding a flower she picked toward him.] Here. I’ll give you this flower.

[He stares at it, a little confused, but before he can respond, the puppy gets distracted and runs off to chase after something, dragging the little girl behind]

Wait for me, Mary! Mary!

[The bright sky fades into the dark of night, though the setting is still the same: the field outside the base. The boy holds out one hand and presses the button on what looks like some sort of remote... and the base is shaken by a series of explosions before erupting into a sea of flames.]

Mission complete.

[As he turns to leave, the force of the explosion of a nearby mobile suit sends another backward through the fence and into the side of a civilian apartment complex. A moment later, it, too, explodes, destroying the building and damaging the surrounding ones. There’s nothing he can do except stare in shock and horror as his mission goes horribly awry, the flower the little girl had given him still grasped in his other hand.

When morning breaks, he returns to the scene to survey the damage, only to find a teddy bear and the body of Mary, the little girl’s dog. The complex that had been destroyed in the blast had been the one she lived in. Scooping up the puppy’s body, he carries it elsewhere to be buried, a display of remorse for his actions.

...which doesn’t please his handlers. The boy is taken back to their base of operations and slated for ’retraining’.]

That’s ludicrous! You mean use the Gundam as a tool of carnage?!

This is a war! Sacrificing the general public is of no relevance. Got it? Now retrain him at once! Our weapon has no use for human kindness!

You’re right. But do you really believe Heero Yuy would be pleased if we obliterated mankind?

[He can hear their argument from behind the door, but there is little he can do about it. After all, weapons don’t need to feel or think, just do as their told.]
