It seems as though many people are beginning to contemplate career decisions these days. Some of them are quite quaint. One might even say they can be considered charming.
For example, opening a tea shop is such an endearing little idea, particularly for one so experienced in the arts of war. That kind of endeavor could only be undertaken in a peaceful, gentle place like this one. The sort of place where it becomes entirely appropriate to enter into an "early" retirement of sorts. [Is he mocking you, Ukitake? ...yes. Sorry! Except no he's not.]
For my own part, I took the time to dabble in old things. The role of a captain, the role of a general, these are far less active positions than those of... for example, a standard warrior. A field agent, one could say. Indeed, you could suggest that any seated position is inherently inactive, compared to that of a man or woman assigned to... clean up duty. [By which he means you lame cannonfodder shinigami who have to fight hollows in the streets. Rukia.] Well, that's certainly not meant to criticize. I only meant to muse on my general tendency to sit out true combat, in the past century. For that reason alone, it was worth the exercise and sport t spend time in that arena.
One should never neglect one's skills, after all.
[Not that he actually fought. Not that he cares whether or not you think he did. But there's a certain satisfaction to announcing his activities - he knows his old comrades will suspect that he took the opportunity to draw the crowd into his power. Which he did. It amuses him that it's too late to do anything but gnash their teeth.]
Still, nightly battle can be wearying. [Boring, one could say.] Perhaps I'll find another means of keeping myself busy. It has been some time since I last taught, for example, and that does seem a frequent choice for the strong, these days. [Byakuya, what's with the calligraphy class? And if he's not mixed up - which he's not - isn't the Isley person teaching swords? It's like an education epidemic, and he's amused by it.] Perhaps I might teach languages, or writing?
It has been some time since I last made the time for my quill, after all.
Ah, but first onto business.
Kaname, if your energy sensing abilities remain intact, come and find me. Gin and I are co-residing at present - you are of course welcome to join us. [By which he means you're expected to. Good thing he had Gin kill that old rich guy, otherwise he wouldn't have all these extra rooms. What?]
Luciela, I did have quite a lovely time at our tea appointment. Perhaps we can trade stories again, some time.
