[The rattling of trees can be heard in the background, and the chattering of people - oddly far away.]To those who have been here far longer than I... this weather. Is it commonplace for the skies to be so indecisive? Snow in Autumn, thunderstorms, windstorms... it seems rather chaotic, don't you think ( Read more... )

[Relevant to my interests catches Deneve's ear. Phrases like that always raise a flag with her, wary as she is of being manipulated.]

The weather is a little out of the norm, but it isn't unheard of for it to behave strangely.

Neither is it unheard of for people to be afraid of what is different. But the natives do seem a bit more restless than usual.

Deneve.

Presumably you have one as well.

Miss Deneve, then. I agree with your observations about people, though I rarely hear it said so plainly.

As far as the weather is concerned, ah, one might say in my world there are people whose abilities can extend to changing the very atmosphere. They can command the sky itself. I wondered if such a person might be the cause of this odd climate change, whether from my world or from another entirely.

And yes, so I do. You might call me Magnus.

[Pause while she processes that information.]

...If what you say about those powers is true, then it seems more than likely to be a person behind it. Even the mist isn't as fickle as this at the worst of times.

Are those sorts of abilities common where you come from?

That was my suspicion as well.

I would call them neither common nor uncommon, precisely. I can think of two people who possessed such an ability offhand. Both styled themselves as gods, for a time. One never did quite outgrow that tendency.

But then, perhaps if one can command the skies and are called a god by those who see it done... perhaps that makes them a god, of a sort.

Of course, they ae not the only sort of abilities one might command. Are these things unknown to you?

Control over the weather is not something people possess where I come from, though there are many who have the ability to do things that might seem impossible. So it doesn't surprise me much that there are people who do.

As to whether or not they're gods, that's up to those who believe in them.

A very practical stance to take, Miss Deneve, and one I find myself largely in agreement with. Although I suppose it may make a difference on some physical level what one calls a god and what one does not.

My own world was home to several races of those called gods, though they were seldom worshipped in modern times.

Gods live beside with humans where you come from?

Indeed. Gods and those given the name, justly or otherwise.
