[The first thing heard when the Forge clicks on is the sound of footsteps. The owner of this Forge is walking about the city, apparently.

[A quiet 'hmmm' sound] Does anyone know how approximately how much one of the burnt out buildings would cost?

[He's only got about two weeks left in his room, and as much as he's prepared to go back to living ( Read more... )

It's like the age of the gladiators. How much money is this thing going to give you if you win? Enough to get a space? Some of the buildings weren't all that damaged ...

...That's what I just asked.

And what the hell is a gladiator?

You know more people that men. You should know the answer by now, I'd think!

...... gladiators are armed men of ancient Rome. They fought against other armed men or animals in an arena with the empire as their audience. They entertain people. Not usually seasoned warriors. They could be anyone really. I find the arena thing similar. But perhaps not the definition of a gladiator in itself.

If I knew the answer, do you think I would have bothered asking.

...ancient...Rome? Entertain people...? [He would say 'you have got to be kidding', only, he's not surprised that people would have come up with something like that.]

You're asking the wrong questions again.

... Rome. Rome! Come on, everyone and their mother knows Rome! [Sighs] Yes, entertainment. They weren't really warriors, those gladiators. Or some might have been. But for sure, there were common no-battle-training people who fought in the arena. For entertainment~

What the hell does that mean?

I asked the same questions you asked me.

I've never heard of it. [And if it were video, Spirit would see his scowl darken to an even deeper grimace.]

Lovely. People watched others die for entertainment. [You can tell he sounds pissed.] Bet they wouldn't be so damn cavalier if they knew the combatants...

Well, did you find out anything yet? From people who are not me?

[A small sigh.]

Yeah well, people are douchebags as much as they are nice. You know how history is tainted with so much blood. This is just one of those old things practiced ages ago. People care as much as they don't care. [There was probably more weight to that statement than just the normal nonchalant-tone. Because he's seen what people can do. He's devoured souls of once-upon-a-time good people who turned bad.] They knew who and what were entertaining them. Or maybe they didn't. And if they did, it wasn't enough to put a stop to it apparently.

I told you everything I found out!

[A slightly exasperated huff before his tone goes grim again.]

Of course I know. I've seen it myself. I just...people hadn't sunk so low as to watch death for fun. Well, sane people, anyway. [He's thinking of Kimbley...]

Well that's pretty useless now!

[Mutters something about cranky old men. And then his tone retains that nonchalant-touch again. Except had this been a video, his expression would have looked dark and sad.]

People, are people Scar. Some may think they're doing it for something so righteous and some may think they're doing it under the pretense to protect someone. Or some for kicks. In the end, all of our hands are dirty. Some just dirtier than most.

I don't see you coming up with any useful information.

[And then he is silent for a minute or two because that...that hits home. There's a lot of blood on his own hands, and for a while, he had convinced himself he was doing it in the name of god.

He's suddenly grown uncomfortable with the topic and when he speaks, his voice shakes, just slightly.]

L-Let's change the subject.

[Just like that, the topic is maneuvered over to something else and the rather neutral tone is replaced with something rather extra cheery and exaggerated. He easily slips in to riling the other man up, to focus on something other than what Spirit feels must have been unpleasant thoughts for Scar.]

Oi! Old man, you're not thinking of going out in the arena, are you? What if you break your back or your arthritis acts up? Granted, Sakura-chyan~ can probably fix something up for you because she's the only doctor I know around here~ Ah, her healing hands must be so, so nice~
