[002 Video]

[The video clicks on to the sight of Kankuro, settled in a quiet place out-of-doors with some wood and basic woodworking tools at hand. He's evidently got his Forge propped up on something, since both his hands are occupied with what looks like a half-finished wooden box, something that'll be an appropriate size for rings or trinkets when it's ( Read more... )

[It's fine craftsmanship, Sasori notes. Kankuro clearly has a delicate hand suited for detail work, a necessity for any puppeteer who wishes to create true works of art.]

Hmm, you're rather skilled.

...But isn't this sort of thing a waste of your talents?

Yeah, I've had a little practice.

[Kankuro's tone is dryly amused; after all, what puppeteer worth the name wouldn't be good at this?]

A waste, huh? And just what would you consider not a waste, here?

Your first puppet. Have you begun constructing it yet?

And you're a shinobi, aren't you? Those talents are also ones you're letting go to waste.

I'm working on it. It's not going to put food in my mouth, though.

I'm a shinobi of Suna. Like I told you, old man -- I'm no mercenary.

I see. I suspect you don't have much in the way of tools here, either, do you? Surely that must be hindering your progress.

Hmph, still holding on to such childish notions. One must adapt to their environment, you realize.

Yeah, doesn't help. Once I've got some money in my pocket I should be able to acquire more.

I'm not interested in adapting so much I stop being myself, thanks.

...There's no need to wait so long. I could lend you mine.

[A pause. That's... actually a rather tempting offer. But at the same time, Kankuro doesn't like the symbolism or the obligation. Or, for that matter, the prospect of having his first puppet colored by Sasori's oversight.]

What's in it for you?

The opportunity to observe your first work take shape. It's been many years since I've watched another puppeteer construct a new work.

[Observe, not oversee. Sasori's careful with his choice of words, to suggest a passivity to his desired role.]

So the catch is having you staring over my shoulder.

Thanks for the offer, but I'll pass. Rather do this on my own anyhow.

...That's a waste of valuable time, to put off constructing your first work when you could have the opportunity to work on it right now.

[He sounds thoughtful.]

You've already put it off for a long time, haven't you? It's unusual to only now be creating your first, at your age.

I've been putting it off for years, old man. A few more months won't hurt anything.

Yeah, yeah. Shit's happened. Sorry I'm not up to your standards for a creator.

Do you truly believe I'd make this offer if I thought you weren't up to my standards? Surely you don't think I'd let just anyone use my own tools.

[Is that a hint of...disappointment?]

...Or is it that you lack confidence in your own ability? That seems unlike you, from the determination you've shown me before.

I don't know what you'd do, or what's going on in that twisted mind of yours.

And you know, I really don't care.

[And he's lyyyyyying through his teeth. In reality, Sasori might be rattling him just a teeny bit with this.]

An artist needs courage and the willingness to take risks. When you've gathered yours, seek me out.

Unless, of course, you're content to spend the rest of your life crafting these worthless trinkets.

[And he cuts the feed.]

[Kankuro just stares at the Forge for a moment, then snorts quietly.]

Courage, old man? That's not what's in question here.

[But even to his own ears -- maybe only to his own ears -- the words sound thin and hollow. His reasons for holding back on the puppet are half excuses, half matters of his own shortcomings.

Maybe it's time to start seriously working on her again.]
