[Did someone say party?]

[Yes they did. Buffy arrives dressed like a sorbet, drops off a package by the door, and gets to the business of being life-of-the-party girl.]

[Because he really doesn't spend enough time trolling the other Summers sister. ... No really though, what is that dress. All these women from the future that just show off bare legs like it's nothing - it's all very strange to him. At least he knows better than to bring up the push up bra...]

Would you care for a glass of wine, Miss?

[He's got both red and white on the tray he's balancing deftly on top of one palm.]

["Ooh, wine!" is probably not the most distinguished way of responding to an offer of a drink. And yet, here it is:]

Ooh, wine!

[And here comes the part where she tries to figure out whether she likes red or white. She pauses for a moment before picking up the white. Mild is good.]

....you looks pretty Victorian, there.

[Let us address the obvious. Sure, why not?]

[Strangely spirited reaction to the wine aside, apparently Dawn's not the only one who can make statements he finds difficult to respond to.]

...Thank you?

Well, what I mean is, it suits the... theme!

[The theme being... ??? She sips the wine.]

It's better than walking around Anatole in, say, a space suit.

[He was not planing a theme for this party other than "Priscilla's birthday," but he'll just nod. That's probably a safe gesture.

...Nothing about agreeing with a phrase like "space suit" is safe.]

I can't quite say what one of those looks like, Miss, so I'll just have to take your word for that.

Traditionally? It's all white and foily.

With a big glass window over your face.

[What on earth...?

Well. Not really on earth at all, apparently...]

I'll have to take your word for it, then.

My word is definitely good in this area.

[And then there is wine sipping.]

So, the victorian thing, is that part of the theme, or do you just dress that way?

[Best not to dwell on why, and instead focus his energy on her other words.]

I do dress this way. It is the livery I am expected to wear as a butler.

[...]

Perhaps I should mention that in my own world, the year is 1889.

[Answering the question she didn't exactly ask, but hey, it tends to shed light on things for some people.]

Oh! That's really... [...OLD?] ...retro of you.

[Guess what word in that sentence didn't exist until 1974?]

...

If that is offensive to you, I do apologise.

Huh? No, I just mean you're totally down with the out of date fashion. You know, so out of date it's cool again.

I mean, from my perspective.

Oh, I see. That was a… compliment, then?

[He thinks that’s what she’s trying to get at, with “totally down” and “cool” and… Retro. Interesting. But he’s hesitant to absorb any of this into his vocabulary, recalling the Pushup Bra Incident.]

In that case, thank you for your kindness, but I was not making any particular fashion choice in wearing what I wear. It is just how a butler is expected to dress.

Well. I don't know if it's a compliment, but it's definitely a thing.

[...Right.]

An astute observation on your part, then.
