I'm posting this here so I don't forget it later. This is a quote from The Once and Future King, by T.H. White.
"His word was valuable to him not only because he was good, but also because he was bad. It is the bad people who need to have principles to restrain them."
This is a kind of depressing sentiment, but I personally understand what he means. I hold myself to a high moral code not because of my want to do good, but my desire to not do bad things I might think of.
