There are a lot of Christmassy fics suddenly sprouting up, which cheers me greatly. And I think I'm safe in saying they are Christmas fics, in that they revolve around trees and Santa and mistletoe and ... actually, they're all pagan, but hey, Christianity subsumed them - it's really good at doing that.
My family's Christmas traditions consist of going into the city on Christmas Eve, because we are die-hard consumerists, yes! (What recession? is our favourite phrase.) We've done it every year since we moved to Ireland; it is only on looking back that I realise it's probably because my parents had in no way finished their Christmas shopping by then. How our childhood illusions can be shattered. I'm super-organised, by the way; it's something folk I hardly know comment on, but I had all my gifts bought by the second week in December. I don't understand how people get frazzled or behind in this, but then they probably don't understand ME, so it's all good.
But! Fic!
Dressing Gown Blues by
frankkincense was the first fic up at
bandom_solstice, the equal-opportunities bandom fest. (Oh man, what I could say about fests in this fandom would not be even slightly in the Christmas Spirit, whatever that is - the Holy Spirit's illegitimate cousin, maybe? - so I'll cork it.) Hands up, I did beta it. Beta'ing is such a privilege when you can see how your help actually brings a fic from something to something more. This fic is simply delightful. Helen found her bandom voice so quickly, I'm actually jealous. Mine is godawful - I think I spent too much time killing people in HP. (CHARACTERS, I mean.) Go read it! Preferably with hot chocolate by a tree and roaring fire - tip: don't put the tree on the fire. This would be a waste of tree.
Happy Hogswatch, people. I love you all, but
murklins,
jehnt, Helen and
frantic_mice are very precious to me right now. I’d probably force-feed you Roses if you were here, I’m just saying. Isn’t it lucky for me awesome people exist and I know them? (I don't know how lucky it is for them, mind you.)
Goodnight, flist.
