Franny and Zooey, JD Salinger

I'd love to say I'm being rebellious by not reading The Catcher in the Rye first, but in fact the library just didn't have it. (Although maybe I get points for avoiding it when I was a disaffected teenager?)

I didn't understand this at all, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of it. For one thing, it was short. I can put up with a certain amount of LOL-pretension before getting bored - a bit like the Yerkes-Dodson curve. Optimal levels of pretention. There were two elements of the actual style that I had issue with - for example:

She stood for a moment - rather as if it were a rendezvous point of some kind
like doesn't he know?

There's a lot of phrases like that, where the POV gets disconnected. (Or to use a favourite term of CC's, 'unhitched'.) Also, if he would stop using 'so to speak,' I'd be really fucking happy.

I liked the characterisation of Mrs Glass and Zooey is pretty awesome. I was confused initially, as Zooey Duschanel is a girl and I assumed she'd have to be named after the one other (fictional) character with the weird-ass name. I WAS WRONG.

It was as if Eve had asked Cain whether that wasn't his lovely new hoe lying out there in the rain

Funny!

'The expression is Franny's young man [...] not her boy friend.'

lol no.

Not to set up some cozy, holier-than-thou trusting place with some sticky, adorable divine personage who'll take you in his arms and relieve you of all your duties and make all the Weltschmerzen and Professor Tuppers go away and never come back.

This is about the only part I gelled with, and I agree, Zooey! Not about praying but this, yes. And who WAS writing the whole Zooey part? It was Zooey, right, not Buddy? WTF?

I'm going to note down the quotes from Seymour's door, because I have to actual return this book at some point. (I hate the way libraries make you do that.)

O snail
Climb Mount Fuji,
But slowly, slowly!

Do you think God does not know that he is being worshipped in images and pictures? If a worshipper should make a mistake, do you not think God will know his intent?
Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna

I'd totally love to write fanfic about the Glasses. Is that evil and wrong?
