There's a coffee shop downstairs that I like to frequent. The coffee's good, they have organic there, and it's not one of the national chains (that I know of, unless someone else has heard of Olympic). There are a number of women who work there who are obviously from the same place; they all look and dress similarly...but what made me curious was their language. It was very beautiful to listen to, and was not Indo-European - I couldn't make out any roots or analogues. There were signs in Hangul (written Korean) around the place, but that was obviously not their language. I asked, and it turned out to be the owner's; they, however, were from Ethiopia, and speaking Amharic. It was interesting and pleasant enough that I might look into it more sometime.
Got me thinking about my goal to create my own language, which I have on
my 43 Things list. Not likely to ever be done, in fact, because there's no one to speak to - unless of course I speak to other crazy people. I've looked at Lojban, but it just seems too artificial...don't know. Might have to rethink that goal.
