It's far from an impossible task to top the original Matrix. It's a feat performed every other weekend when decent movies come out. I personally feel that this one topped the original, and was my favorite of the series. Not to say that it was good, merely an ok, 2 star movie as was the rest of the series.
This was most definitely not the best way to end the series. I mean, think about it. A machine would do what ensures its survival. Therefore, it would make the deal with Neo and then destroy Zion anyway. I can't believe that it'd actually compromise and give the humans peace and a chance to recover and beat them. A nice way to wrap the entire series up would be to have Neo beat Smith, and then LIVE since he's such a resistant piece of shit. After that, he'd use his real-world powers to jack into the main machine's power core and shut it down/explode it. Thus, the human race is guaranteed survival, the evil machines(who were trying their utmost to enslave or kill the humans for the first 2 and 2/3 movies) are beaten, and it's a brand new day. Then that piece of shit Neo can die. A very underwhelming ending.
