This is Austin, Texas, where many of you will be two months from today.
Sorry I've been away for a bit. Between family crises, the High Holidays and wedding stuff, it's been a bit busy. Oh, did I also mention that my schedule has been changed and that my news director is leaving at the end of this month to take the same position at KRLD in Dallas (Market #5)? No, I guess not, because, well, it's been kinda busy here.
Okay, to catch you up. My mom did have the cataract surgery, but her doctor assures me she'll be able to fly to Austin for the wedding. While she'll be accompanied by my sister-in-law from Montana, she will not be accompanied by my sister.
Some of you have heard me talk about "Junior." That's my sister, Stacy. She's five years older than me and has suffered a decade of hell, between a failed marriage, failing self-confidence and a failing battle with alcohol. Sadly, now her liver has failed, too. It happened when we were in Wisconsin for my groom's maid's wedding celebration. We found out when we returned to Austin. She was hospitalized again ten days ago, and it doesn't look good.
If you could only meet Junior: no more sweet or caring or nurturing a soul could you hope to meet. She's famous (and has been since high school) for "Stacyisms," innocently putting her foot in her mouth and chewing it to a fine pulp. It's part of her charm, along with her remarkable streak of gullibility. (Ask me about "Boxing Day" or the definition of a calorie.)
That aside, work goes on at a breakneck pace. I'm now working 9am-5pm, because they think they can get more story production, if I'm on dayside. It's nice to get up after the ass-crack of dawn and I am getting more stories, because people here orient their news day to the TV stations' 5:00 news. (Case in point: One live shot today, and it was at 4:30pm.)
I have been nominated for a "Katie" award by the Press Club of Dallas for some stories I filed on the Papal funeral. Awards to be passed out at some gala bash in Dallas on November 5th. My stuff was up against material from reporters in seven states, from Denver to Houston. To be nominated is a big deal. I'm not planning on winning. (It would be nice if I did, but...)
Oh...and watch your mailboxes for greetings from Oregonians abroad, bidding you to come hither two months from today to celebrate.
