Hey! Remember Me?

Apr 30, 2008 22:01

This is Austin, Texas, where I'm still alive, and hoping you are same.  There is much to talk about and discuss, but here's is what they call in baseball parlance "the boxscore."

Neither Sarah nor I have the same jobs we had when last you left our story.  Sarah took a job with the U.S. Yankee Gov'mint last October.  The Corporation for National & Community Service (VISTA, AmeriCorps, et. al.) opened a national member support unit in Austin.  Sarah saw an ad in a Sunday paper last summer, applied, interviewed, and STUCK THE LANDING!  The job involves travel, as she works with VISTAs in the Northeast and the Upper Plains (the Dakotas).  So she'll be in Chicago and Philadelphia at various points this summer.

Me, well, I've said "farewell" to commercial radio.  (The language was much stronger, but the sentiment was about right.)  I am now news editor at KUT Radio, the National Public Radio affiliate here in Austin.  Being an editor means I'm essentially 2nd in command in the newsroom.  There's very little field reporting, which I kinda miss.  (But I won't when it's 1200 degrees with humidity outside at 4pm and I'm trying to crank out a script and audio for an on-scene live shot.)  I'm working with a very talented staff.  The news director wants me to use my experience and my unmitigated gaul to help move a six-year-old news department that's already won 50 awards (AP's, Murrows) to the next level.

What that level is...stay tuned, 'cause I haven't got a friggin' clue!
