RPG Ponderings (and a bit of randomness)

Well; another day, another dollar.

I'm falling a bit behind in my paperwork because so many other people around me need to have their hands held as they fill out the simplist of order forms. But, whatever; that's not why I'm writing today.

I figure it's time for me to revisit what I can only call Project: Gamegeek; my attempt to justify my years of opinions and RPG absorption by helping write and design an original role playing game system and setting. It's not an easy process (not that I ever thought it would be), especially since I refuse to make something oversimplified under the argument that it's "just that much easier to learn". I also will not make things so number-crunchy and stats intensive that you'll need 2 weeks and a firm understanding of calculus to just make a charactor.

But where do I start when designing the actual rules mechanics of an RPG? That's what's tripping me up. My best thoughts are using the following questions to help me build a framework of rules and concepts on.

- What are the basic attributes of a character?
- What kind of dice mechanic do I want to use? (Even if no dice are used)
- Do I want a broad selection of skills, or narrow and specific? (And should I expect the skill list to expand with future releases?)
- How do players advance their characters?

I'm essentially looking for opinions from other gamers based on what they've played and enjoyed. This is brainstorm time, and any thoughts are good (even if I don't agree with them).
