Winter bike-commuting adventures will be a separate post.

Today (last night, really) marked the first day of inescapably nasty December Michigan weather. It's going to be cold, cold, cold, and I'm deathly afraid I may have to spend the next four months hiding under the blankets, drinking tea or hot chocolate, and catching up on my reading.

Sweet!

I don't know what NOAA's calling for, but Environment Canada is forecasting one of the coldest winters in quite some time. Of course, I'm genuinely looking forward to it; I'm already making plans to play chess out on the harbour once it freezes up enough.

Are you going to carve a chessboard out on the ice with skates? That would be beyond awesome.

I hadn't thought of that, and it seems like an awful lot of work. I was more into playing up the contrast between chess as a symbol of intellect and civilization, and the untamed and physical character of winter and the lake; game of kings in a place for barbarians and all that.

I suppose it could be fun to make up some moulds and make pieces out of ice beforehand, if we go ahead with the board carved into the ice though.

I've seen duck/swan ice molds, and have a hard time believing that there isn't an ice mold set somewhere (probably in silicone) for chess pieces.

I'm really hoping there's a blizzard while I'm visiting. I sort of miss snow, but only enough to be able to deal with it for a week.

And yeah, Founders sounds great! I haven't been to a good brewery in some time. I heard they moved to a bigger location near The Intersection?

That is a remarkably sane perspective to have about snow.

Yes, the new Founders location is quite nice (and nonsmoking! with a heated front porch, everybody wins!), and conveniently located approximately 1,000 feet from my new place of employment. :) They also expanded their menu (more sandwiches, French-bread pizzas), so it's a nice place to drop in for lunch. When exactly will you be around?

Hey Guy,

Just surfing lj and saw your beautiful artwork on your profile page.

Wonderful.

Hope you had/having a wonderful holiday ... under the blankets with cocoa and scrumptuous books ... and family and friends!
