Today, lunch was delicious red pepper soup brought by one of my coworkers, I got off a little early because I may have to stay late tomorrow, and when I went to get my car's oil changed, Sears gave me a discount because I'm a regular.

Not bad!

(Also, lunch tomorrow is homemade chili, courtesy of the second annual office chili contest.  I like this tradition.)

Open enrollment for benefits at work is this month.  I'm doing the math on the vision plan (which I have not subscribed to, because in previous years they wouldn't pay for high-end lenses at all) and I can't work out whether it's worth it.  I shall have to ask HR for some clarification.

And there was some discussion at work today about the health care issues.  One I hadn't previously thought of: there's religious groups who do not believe in insurance.  Some of the hardline Mennonites, for instance.  They believe that insurance is putting one's trust in mankind instead of God.  Some of the plans on the table would fine people who don't get coverage of some form.  But if it's for religious reasons, can they do that?

Our health care is just so messed up.  There's no incentive to keep medical costs down, while nobody wants to (or should) subsidize other people's poor choices.  I'm not convinced that government health care would do either.  There has got to be a better way.

Also, in this issue and in many others, I just want to say, once and for all, that there is an ENORMOUS difference between helping your neighbor and paying the government to do it.  I want everyone to have the help they need.  I just don't want them to have to go through the government to get it.
