Lately I've been doing a lot of reading and packing, and that's about it. Chris and I start moving next weekend, yay! I've also been working a ton of overtime,
Anyway, so I finished Dracula, which was actually quite good. I didn't find it as sexist as lot of people did, given that Mina is the heroine. On the other hand, I was a little annoyed with the apparent stupidity of the characters. (Um, spoiler alert). After Lucy is turned into a vampire, it's pretty obvious that Mina is being preyed upon as well, and not just because the story is so classic and iconic that most people already know what is going to happen. She begins to display the same symptoms and characteristics as Lucy, so how do the men not immediately realize that she is being bitten? I also read Sabriel, by Garth Nix. I've heard that it was really good fantasy, and also that it was really disappointing. I decided to give it a shot, and I was pleasantly surprised. I usually don't like fantasy, but because The Lord of the Rings is such a masterpiece of literature (and I guess Harry Potter is fantasy as well) I continue to try fantasy series. I usually have my heart broken by the genre's abject silliness, and by the presence of metaphorical chainmaille bikinis. One fantasy series that I quite like, however, is the A Song of Ice and Fire series, by George R.R. Martin (conscious reference to J.R.R. Tolkien? I think so). I've only read the first book, but it was more of a political thriller, a Tom Clancy novel, set in a fictional fantasy world. Then there are the really horrendous worlds created by Marion Bradley, Robert Jordan, and Terry Goodkind. Garth Nix is somewhere in between, and I heartily recommend it as an addicting, pleasant, exciting read. Now I have started on Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad (who, by the way, was Polish).
Today I am off to Conflict Kitchen with my friends Danielle and Becky. I haven't seen them in forever, and Danielle is a zillion months pregnant, so I'm dying to see her. Yay! Then tomorrow will be spent packing. Again. Yay.
