Back from an NUS conference, one at which a document cutting both the time and number of delegates to save cash was successfully pushed through. It was done in such a way that would encourage the least democratic support possible, with delegates voting to incorporate 6 pages of points without having going through any of them - instead either voting for or against. You are either with us or against us was NUS President Kat Fletcher's message. Is rather depressing watching a room full of people vote to incorporate a document slashing the democratic structures of the NUS while not having debated any of the individual items. Conference also voted down by a majority a motion calling for diversity and inclusiveness with regards to the representation of minority groups. This lead to a woman behind me asking - in a tone that included a mix of disappear and disbelief - if everyone present was a bigot. In all a rather depressing affair
