Title: Night-time Terrors
Pairing: Rocky/Adam
Rating: PG
References: The first movie.
AN: Unbeta'd (sorry Aoife). Posted to cheer up kikos-ai. :) It is kind of angsty though, like everything I seem to be writing lately, so I'm not sure if 'cheer up' is the right phrase, KK. ;)

He’d never been afraid of dense places before, never claustrophobic, never feeling like the walls were closing in or the surrounding area was shrinking around him, but now he was afraid; afraid of silent trees in a jungle that went on for ever, trees that could hide any manner of trap just waiting for him; waiting for them; waiting for the mistake that would cost them everything.

---

Being chased, now, that was familiar; ducking, weaving, forcing himself out of the way and yet he still found himself trapped; trapped between creatures made of stone that never stopped coming and there was no way out. They’d come all this way and over the past twenty-four hours he’d been attacked by creatures made of purple slime; by winged warriors; by undead dinosaur bones and now this; he was definitely not having a good day.

---

A voice calling his name, a voice with an edge of not-quite-panic, but it was enough to spur him on, because he couldn’t lose that person, not if he wanted life to mean anything.

---

Adam sat bolt upright in bed, pulling the bed sheets with him as he ratcheted up gasping for breath, black shirt sticking to him while his heartbeat rushed in his ears like the sound of a tidal wave coming straight at him. Heavy warmth landed on his shoulder and he reacted instantly, rolling out of bed with a yell and falling into a ready stance. Rocky stared back at him, hands held up in innocence, not moving so much as a millimetre until Adam recognised him and relaxed.

“That must have been some nightmare,” the former red ranger commented as Adam sank back onto the bed, tugging absently on the sheets so they covered the bed again instead of having loose over one corner.

He nodded slowly, not really wanting to think about it. “Yeah. It was.”

“Where were you?” Rocky asked quietly and Adam shrugged, hoping Rocky would drop it, knowing he wouldn’t, frustrated that he wouldn’t and glad he wouldn’t, because Rocky always knew when he needed to talk about something, no matter how much he would rather avoid the topic: a double-edged blade, falling in love with your best friend; they knew all the good stuff but they also knew all the bad stuff that wanted to stay buried.

“Phaedos,” he said eventually. “That whole journey.”

Rocky nodded. “Parts of it weren’t so bad,” he pointed out. “Dulcea was hot.”

Adam snorted derisively: trust Rocky.

“And she kissed you, too, don’t forget,” Rocky continued. “None of the rest of got kissed by the hot warrior priestess in a bikini and knee high boots.”

Adam reached back and smacked the nearest bit of Rocky he could reach. “Is that all you think about?”

“No,” Rocky said airily. “Only about eighty percent of the time.”

Adam huffed in amusement and leant back into the solid warmth of his best-friend-turned-lover and closed his eyes, enjoying the feel of Rocky’s arms around him. “You came so close to falling,” he said softly and there was a long moment of silence until Rocky’s arms tightened slightly, the memory obviously catching up.

“Went with the job,” the other man said quietly. “We knew that when we accepted the Power.”

“Did we?” Adam countered. “We were seventeen, Rocky. Sure we had some idea of what we were getting into, but did we really know? Deep down?”

Rocky sighed. “Maybe not. But if you had to do it over, would you?”

Adam thought about it; thought about everything he’d learnt by being a ranger; thought about what it had cost them, but he wasn’t surprised when the reasoned answer matched his gut reaction. “Yeah, I guess I would,” he replied eventually and he could feel Rocky’s head leaning against his shoulder.

“Then it’s worth it. And besides,” Rocky continued. “We saved the world. An entire planet and we saved it. On a daily basis. Not many people get to say that.”

“True.”

“Not to mention all the cool toys we got.”

“I wouldn’t call our weapons toys,” Adam replied dryly but Rocky nipped at his ear.

“You’re no fun,” the other man teased.

Adam turned and raised his eyebrows at his long-time friend. “That’s not what you were saying earlier.”

“Details.” But despite the light tone Rocky’s touch was gentle, as was the kiss brushed against his temple. “Go back to sleep, Adam. Phaedos is long over.”

With a sigh Adam settled back down, secure in the circle of Rocky’s arms. Yes, Phaedos was over and yes, his time as a ranger was over, but sometimes he wondered… was it ever really over?
