“Today really sucked,” Rocky said casually as he sat with his back against Adam’s bed, resting easily against the boy sitting next to him.
“Tell me about it,” Adam muttered. “I’m just glad it’s over.”
“And the Mirror’s gone now, right?”
“Definitely. Unless it could survive bursting into flames and vanishing into nothing.”
“You know that you’re not what Goldar said you were, don’t you?” Rocky asked sharply. “He was trying to wear you down and he lies like he breathes.”
“I know,” Adam agreed. “And no, I don’t believe the things he said. Most of the time, anyway.”
“Most of the time?” Rocky demanded.
“Not that often,” Adam replied defensively. “Just sometimes.”
Rocky leant forward and kissed Adam full on the mouth. “You are not those things,” he said firmly, intent on getting it into Adam’s head. “You’re not weak and you’re not a failure. You hear me?”
Adam smiled slightly. “I hear you.”
Rocky thought about that one, then corrected himself. “Do you believe me?” he tried again and this time Adam’s expression faltered.
“Most of the time.”
