AN: Follow up to Back at the Beginning. And it seems to be a day of finishing challenges because this is last of my Ayase claim at 5trueloves as well. :)
Tatsuya trudged wearily along the beach to where the Time Ship was waiting, waiting to take his friends home, wishing more than anything that he didn’t have to say goodbye to them a second time; it had been hard enough the first time round, he didn’t even want to think how hard it would be this time and naturally it came at a time when he was just starting to take their presence for granted again. He should have known better.
And there it was. The Time Ship. From a future a thousand years ahead of him, where his friends’ lives were waiting for them and how could he deny them that? How could he ask them to stay when they’d fought so hard to protect a future they could live in? Forcing a smile onto his face he waved at the group gathered outside the ship, not wanting them to feel bad about having to go home after they’d accomplished everything they’d come back for. They’d changed back into the Time Bureau uniforms they’d arrived in and they looked all ready to go. Except for Ayase, who was still, surprisingly, wearing his 21st century clothes as he lounged against the side of the ship.
“Ready to go?” he asked brightly as he jogged over. “You probably can’t wait to get back.”
Yuuri nodded slowly, giving Ayase a sideways glance. “We’re ready,” she conceded. “Ayase, are you sure?”
He shrugged and gave her a half-smile. “I’m sure, Yuuri. I was sure before we even left to come here.”
Tatsuya looked between the two in confusion, wondering at the sad but resigned expression on Yuuri’s face. “Something wrong?”
“No,” Ayase replied, pushing himself away from the ship and shoving his hands into his pockets. “It’s fine, Tatsuya, don’t worry.”
Uh huh, he wasn’t buying that, but as no-one seemed inclined to fill him in Tatsuya had to make do with trying to figure it out himself. Yuuri gave Ayase a firm nod before her expression cracked and she threw her arms around him in a quick, brief hug. “Be well, Ayase.”
“I will. I know what I’m doing, Yuuri. Just make sure you come to visit, alright?”
Tatsuya watched blankly as Ayase said his goodbyes, the former TimeBlue holding on tightly to Sion when their youngest teammate also threw his arms around him with tears in his eyes, leaving Tatsuya wondering even more what on earth was going on. He knew what he wanted it to be, but it couldn’t be because that was the obvious option and things were never that easy.
Except eventually it was over, all the goodbyes had been said, the hugs and tears shared and one by one his friends stepped into the Time Ship. Save for one. Ayase made no move to get on board, simply shoving his hands into his pockets and watching them leave, eyes bright with the suggestion of tears, something which he would no doubt deny later.
“Ayase,” Tatsuya said slowly. “You’re…not going back with them?” Please be staying, please be staying, please be staying.
Ayase shrugged and gave him a faint smile. “They all have people waiting for them back there,” he replied lightly. “Except for Sion, but he’ll want to be wherever Domon is. As for me…” he trailed off, licking his bottom lip nervously, “My person’s right here.”
Tatsuya stared at him, not entirely sure he’d heard properly but really hoping he had. As Ayase was still here, though, he thought that maybe… maybe he had. “You’re really staying?” he asked hopefully. “For good this time?”
“Didn’t I just say that?”
Tatsuya grinned at the annoyance in Ayase’s voice but before he could say anything the engine of the Time Ship fired up, sending the sand flying and stinging their skin. He grabbed Ayase’s hand, waving madly at the ship with the other as it made its way towards the time hole forming in the sky, unashamed of the tears running down his cheeks even as he smiled. His friends were gone and he didn’t know if he’d ever see them again, but Ayase was staying. Against all his hopes and expectations, Ayase was staying.
