Sometimes Imanaka Emiri wondered why on earth Yukito-san and Ryouga-san thought they were subtle, because they really weren’t; not to somebody who knew them. Even now they weren’t really doing anything, wiping down the tables now the customers were gone and bickering as they went, nothing out of the ordinary, at least to the untrained eye. But if you knew what you were looking for… well, to start with, Yukito-san didn’t even work here anymore now that Evorian was gone - he had his own chiropractic business and he was even teaching her along the way - but Ryouga-san had simply smiled at him and pointed out how much easier the evening would be if Yukito-san helped out, seeing as he happened to be here. Yukito-san, instead of arguing as she’d expected, only scowled and shrugged out of his suit jacket; nobody else would get that kind of reaction. At least not without an argument.

And even without that all you had to do was look at them and it was obvious. Yukito-san didn’t let just anybody into his personal space but Ryouga-san was right up close and Yukito-san wasn’t saying a word about it, let alone pushing Ryouga-san away…. She sighed, and from the relative safety of behind the counter, she rested her chin on her hands as she watched them; it wasn’t even as if they were kissing or anything, but they just seemed to radiate coupleness, like it was overflowing from them, radiating out to everyone who might be looking. She didn’t like to admit it, but she couldn’t help feeling a little, well, jealous and it had nothing to do with that brief crush she’d had on Yukito-san a couple of years ago; it was more that she wanted what they had, someone to be that comfortable around, someone to trust that much. Somebody she could be herself around without worrying about what the other person was thinking.

Caught up in her thoughts, which sounded better than admitting she was feeling sorry for herself, Emiri jumped at the sudden dull thump from the table across the room, wondering what was going on.

“Don’t just decide things like that by yourself,” Yukito-san was saying, arms folded across his chest as he stared Ryouga-san down. “We’ve already had that conversation. Numerous times.”

“Come on, Yukito,” Ryouga-san grinned, “it’ll be fun. And Mai-chan really wants to go as well.”

“No. Absolutely not.”

And that was another thing. Well, two, really; she couldn’t remember the last time Ryouga-san had called Yukito-san ‘Sanjou-san’ like he used to, couldn’t even remember if he’d switched to ‘Yukito-san’ before just dispensing with the honorific altogether, but it seemed like one day it was ‘Sanjou-san,’ the next ‘Yukito’ with nothing in between and for someone as polite as Ryouga-san the omission was very telling. Secondly, Ryouga-san had learned very early on that if something was for Mai-chan, Yukito-san was as weak as the rest of them and he wasn’t afraid to use that to his advantage if he thought it was necessary. It hadn’t escaped her notice either that Yukito-san had been the first person Ryouga-san had trusted with Mai-chan and she wondered if that should have told her something.

It was a good thing Mai-chan was so resilient and used to strange things happening around her, because she had to have the weirdest family ever.
