Kai stepped out of the elevator, stifling a yawn. He liked working at the Dolphin Lagoon water park but man the hours were long and he was starving. The cafeteria had better have something decent for lunch today because it had been ridiculous yesterday. Distracted by thoughts of what he was likely to get for lunch he almost walked right past the man hovering by the elevator, but as it was for staff only and he recognised everyone on the staff by now, this guy obviously didn't belong there. He stopped a couple of steps behind the guy, then took the requisite number of steps back to stand in front of him. "Can I help you? You waiting for someone?"
The guy jumped, the camera around his neck bouncing against his chest. "Ah, Tappei," he replied. "Mikami Tappei."
"Tappei-kun won't be down yet," Kai replied, shoving his hands into the pockets of his shorts. "Not for another hour at least. He got late lunch today."
"Oh," the guy replied, looking both crestfallen and frustrated at the same time. "Are you sure?"
"Positive," Kai replied, folding his arms loosely across his chest as he studied the man in front of him. Eighteen months as a Gaoranger had given Kai a good grounding in assessing people and whether or not they were a threat and this guy, while clearly twitchy, wasn't coming off as a threat. It took another moment for Kai to realise that he was under the same kind of scrutiny himself and he raised an eyebrow, waiting for camera-san, as he decided to call the guy for the time being, finished coming to the same conclusion he had. Except for the twitchy part, because he wasn't twitchy. It was an interesting reaction, though and Kai wondered what camera-san was so wary about: it wasn't as if he had the same excuse that being a Gaoranger gave him.
"Look," he sighed, "if you want to wait I can give him a call to let him know you're here and where you'll be when he's done. That work for you?"
Camera-san nodded slowly. "Alright," he agreed. "If you could tell him Makoto's here, that would be fine."
"Okay, then, it won't take a minute." Thankful, not for the first time, that the office was right by the elevator, Kai ducked inside and picked up the phone, keeping a wary eye on Makoto-san outside. Tappei picked up the phone a couple of rings later, which was lucky: there were times you couldn't hear a thing in that room.
"Tappei here."
"Tappei-kun, there's someone here, says he's looking for you," Kai told him, still not taking his eyes of the man standing waiting outside. "Says his name's Makoto."
"Makoto's here?" Tappei replied, his voice taking on a tone Kai recognised only too well from his time as GaoBlue. "Did he say why he was here?"
"Nope. He seems okay, though, apart from being kinda twitchy. I don't know if that's what he's normally like."
"It can be," Tappei said cautiously. "Look, I can't come down now unless--"
"Yeah, I know," Kai interjected. "I can take him to the cafeteria if you want, keep him busy until you get lunch."
"Would you? Thanks Samezu, I owe you one."
Kai grinned to himself. Time to kill two birds with one stone. "See if you can score a couple of concessionary tickets for me? I don't think the girls behind the desk like me too much." Which was annoying, because he was used to people liking him, darn it.
Tappei laughed. "Sure, I'll see what I can do. I'll see you later, okay?"
"Sure. Later." Kai hung up the phone, satisfied that his date for his next day off was all settled and left the office. "Okay, Makoto-san, he'll be down when he can. The cafeteria's this way, if you want to get some lunch?"
Makoto-san hesitated, then nodded. "Alright."
Kai beamed and strolled on ahead, nodding at a couple of people he recognised along the way. "Ah!" he exclaimed happily on seeing what was set out, "it's edible today." Ignoring the dirty look from the sulky guy behind the counter, Kai dug his wallet out and, once he'd paid, made his way over to the nearest empty table, waiting for Makoto-san to follow him over.
"I don't think that guy likes you," Makoto-san said in amusement, seeming a bit more relaxed now and Kai shrugged.
"He's an ass, anyway, I don't care." Seriously, the guy was crankier than Gaku, with none of Gaku's redeeming values whatsoever. "How's the food?"
Makoto-san took a catious mouthful, then grunted a positive-sounding noise that Kai took to mean it was okay. Tucking into his food cheerfully, Kai was pleased to find that Makoto-san wasn't as uptight as he'd expected him to be. Plus, the guy had a fondness for sharks and what wasn't to like about that?
