Serenity - And there was the wee hint of.... "disappointment"

Over on Agent Otter's journal (here), some good points about what's not-so-fantastical about Serenity were brought up... so I wanted to post here what my response was over there since I agreed with quite a bit of it. =\

I just... mediocre is the only word I can use to describe it.

Yeah, I got the same feeling. I definately enjoyed the movie and I was really caught up in it while watching... but afterwards I felt rather listless. Wash and Book are both pretty absent in the movie, which sucks. My friend and I bemoaned the fact that Wash and Zoe "didn't even get to have sex." I also found Inara's character to be lamer than she should have been (at the Training House with Mal and the Operative.....)

I feel like it was a cheater's way out to get rid of Book before we hear anything more about him. I understand the "former Operative" theory, though. Don't know why I hadn't thought of that before. ;;^^ Along that thread... I wasn't so impressed with the Operative because I felt like he was striving too hard to be another Early and, well, no one could compare.

The opening school scene didn't really make sense, IMO. I thought River's weird pyschic powers were a result of the experiments? Given, I'd assume that something had to be there in the first place, but this was a little too much... And my problem with Simon's undercover role is that if he managed to pull that off so well, how the hell does he end up being such a wuss as the series starts up? I'd always had the impression that he wasn't directly involved in the recovery of River and that's why he "recieved" her in the cryo-box.... and they hadn't seen each other for two (is it?) years until Mal opens it up.

The Reavers.... yeah. Mystery lost. How boring! That needed to be left alone... something more bizarre... or at least something not so uniting. The creepiness was how random they were.

And I was bothered by the stand-off fight scene since from the series we don't really have any evidence that Inara knows more than "elegent" weapons, Kaylee doesn't use a gun, and Simon's a bad shot....... And this is only two months (is that right?) after the series was canceled.

River also seems incredibly too lucid. Miranda should hardly be the sole thing messing with her mind. There's got to be other secrets, other things to know. Was she supposed to become someone's pet assasin or not? Aren't there others like her? I mean, that's what's interested me this whole time.

Oook... I just got completely distracted by my roommate tracking down the song "Tom's Diner." We've been trying for the past hour to find it. ;;^^ *coughs* Anyway, thanks for this post, made a lot of good points. (And huzzah for fanfic! That is indeed what we're here for ^_~)

Oh, I know what else I wanted to say. I actually felt things went too fast and that was why things didn't work out. The show was so good with devoted plot lines that were drawn out in a realistic fashion. I much prefer having a series than a movie. So that's what I'd hope would come from this... a renewal of the series.

One last thing before I head for dinner: What about Blue Sun? We really don't get much info about what that's all about.... the the "two by two, hands of blue." I have the final two of the three comics but again I felt like we were being cheated about finding out what the heck was going on....
