BSG Meta: Weakness, Vulnerability and the Quad of Doom

Jun 10, 2009 00:46

Okay Karatekat and I had a discussion about Juliet on Lost and about the difference between vulnerability and weakness and my mind came back to Dee and Sam. Specifically why I find Dee's role in the quad of doom distasteful as opposed to Sam's.  In a lot of ways Dee and Sam highlight the difference between these two things as well. Someone who is vulnerable is experiencing an emotion its simply a result of falling for someone is what you do about it that determines wether you are weak or strong. To me Sam is strong in this situation because ultimately he stays because Kara was honest with him and he knows she's sorry. Dee stays because she can't walk away.  I also think some of weakness on Dee's part comes from the fact that she knows Lee doesn't love her, while Kara has proven her love for Sam more than once at this point.

Kara and Lee also highlight this as well in their own ways. Lee is weak in this situation because of his refusal to admit his own feelings and look beneath the  surface when examining himself. Lee can't admit his own short comings caused this situation in the first place. Lee is self-centered, if Dee had stayed with him for long enough he would have cheated again, because ultimately the marriage wasn't provided what he needed Kara was just the catalyst. Kara on the other hand empathizes with Sam so much she tells him to leave before she hurts him. I also wonder if this wasn't part of why Kara chose Sam in the end, Lee doesn't like the ugly truth and Kara can't pretend everything is fine.
