Big Finish day and Labyrinth and Reptile
Saturday was rather big. Having not left the house much in about a month it was very much needed. First was Big Finish day. Got up in what is normally plenty of time, but *just* missed the bus so ended up having to take the longer route to the station and making the train with only a couple minutes to spare. Subsequently failed to find Sean to sit with, but at least I found him and Max at Slough station, where with an added Paul we all were able to share a taxi to the con.
LOTS of friends were there, spent the morning getting photos and autos. A lovely photo with Paul Darrow and Jacqueline Pearce who told me how lovely I looked. There I was sitting between Avon and Servalan and they both liked me! (*dies and plans to conquer the universe with them*) Then had a single photo with Jacks, I asked her if it was ok to give her a cuddle for the photo and the photographer had to take FOUR photos cause he wasn't happy with the way my spikes looked (note to self always wear spikes for photos). So got a lovely long hug with her. I got autos from Jacks, Lucy and Beth, all three who were in the War Doctor and had nice chats with all of them about how good it was. Three women, all with major roles, I do love Big Finish! I also got a free auto from Kai Owen. I'd bought a copy of the Torchwood audio, but it hadn't arrived in time. So was going to buy a photo instead but he said he would give it to me as I'd bought the CD. We had a lovely chat about the audios, and Children of Earth, which was his favourite Torchwood too. And I got a table photo with him which was really nice. Then more photos with Lalla and John Leeson.
There was then time for a bit of lunch. But the only empty seat was next to some young guy I didn't know. Was joined by Chris and Richard, which was nice. Chris had bought a Chinese copy of Shada which (though wrapped) was still neat to read the back for. Then random idiot started talking and he was one of *those* fans. Young, male, opinionated, I'm fairly sure he'd never slept with a girl, he went on about how awful Sherlock was, then how awful Doctor who was, then how the Doctor could never be a woman and how awful Missy was and how Simms was a much better Master. Needless to say, I finished my pint as quickly as I could and made a hasty exit for the panels.
Got a great seat for the panels on the right 2nd row with no one in front. First panel was the War Doctor panel, which was huge but wonderful. Jon asked Jacks if she would ever play a good character and she said she had no idea where to start. It was lovely having her and David Warner there too. He was on good form, and told big stories about how everything in John Hurt's career was his fault. He's going to be appearing in the 2nd box set for one story. They also said that LEEELA will be in the War Doctor. Which sounds PERFECT, cause really a warrior companion for the War Doctor would be amazing! Plus Lou with John! (Though Beth said Lou wasn't able to make the recordings so she had to read her parts when they did it).
Next panel was Lalla, John and the new 3rd Doctor Tim Trelor. Who was very nice. Was hoping they'd talk more about the new audios, but Lalla seemed a bit sad that she hadn't been able to record with the rest of the cast, and so it didn't get mentioned apart from that and was just a much more standard Romana, K9 and BF panel.
Then was the Blake's 7 panel which was the DIRTIEST panel possibly ever. Paul Darrow, despite his amputations was on FINE form. He started with a joke about Michael Keating selling his dead pubes on ebay, and then it went downhill from there. Cavan Scott, tried to keep it a bit on track, though really the only thing Jacks said was asking why she wasn't "serviced" while he was kneeling before her. Still all told a VERY funny panel. Was great to see them all together and made me think I really needed to get more of the audios with Servalan, almost bought one, but then couldn't remember if I'd bought it already, or just heard people talking about it. So ended up not getting it. Now I think I should have...
Then was the Torchwood panel, which wasn't as rude but a lot more sweary as Kai Owen was on top form (despite being sober). He had a lot of fun stories about making the show. It was the first Torchwood panel I'd been to so really enjoyed it. Made me realise that the thing that made Torchwood so special was that it was ordinary people doing things, and therefore a lot more realistic than Doctor Who, and probably why Children of Earth was therefore so disturbing.
After that headed back to the station with Max and Sean. Had a major rush to get home, eat dinner, and then turn around to go meet Becky and her friend for Labyrinth at the Prince Charles. We bought much booze (thankfully PCC membership made them surprisingly affordable). There was a costume contest where a girl dressed as Jareth and a pretty boy dressed as ballroom Sarah won. (which seemed like the best choices to me). I was a bit worried watching it would be traumatic. I did cry during the titles, but all the cheering and laughing and being able to shout and sing along with the lyrics was very cathartic. Afterwards Becky and I decided to try Reptile as they had said there would be Bowie played. We stayed for a couple hours, danced to a couple songs, managed to crack my phone screen, but by 1.30 decided to call it a night.
Monday I got my new Bowie tattoos. I went to my old tattooist. Got 5 stars. One big one for Bowie, and smaller ones for my friends and me who'd been inspired by him. It was a totally different style than I have had before. Much more traditional. But I really liked the idea that it was different as Bowie is all about embracing change.
