Get Well Cards

“Ah! Why do I have to sign the card?” Rodney grumbled. “You know we are only going to have to do this again in a few more weeks.” Ronon rolled his head back to look at Teyla with an agreeing look.

“I have to say… McKay’s right,” Ronon said with a pleading look to both Keller and Teyla.

Rodney began to point to the girls, “See! And how often does Ronon agree with me?.... Hardly ever.”

Teyla and Keller gave each other a look and sighed.

“Yes, Colonel Sheppard may be in here quite frequently….some because of Ronon,” Keller said with a scolding tone. “But he is still your teammate and this is the closest to death he has ever been. He almost died. ” She tried to give them an imploring look, but it wasn’t working.

“Closest, like when we had to use the defibrillator on him …..three times?” Rodney questioned.

“Or when he was buried under a collapsed building, losing blood,” Ronon chimed in.

“And how about when Todd was sucking the life out of him and….” Rodney began.

“Yes. Yes. That is all true,” Teyla interrupted. “Perhaps Jennifer trying to emphasize that he was as bad as he was wasn’t the best way to convince you, but he is still our friend. It’s the least we could do to help uplift his spirit during his recovery especially after all the times he’s risked his life to save us and Atlantis.”

Ronon still didn’t like the thought of putting his name on a sappy get well card, but what Teyla said made him feel guilty. He was about to sign when Rodney spoke up.

“He doesn’t even look at the cards,” Rodney spoke up.

“What?!” Keller exclaimed with misbelief. “How do you know? Did he tell you?”

Rodney shook his head, “No. You know the trunk he has by his bed….the one with the lock on it?”

Both Ronon and Teyla nodded yes.

“Well, that’s where he keeps them,” Rodney explained.

“And why would he let you see them? “ Keller asked with a reservation in her voice.

Rodney had a confident smile on his face and got a bit excited, “It was purely by accident. He was looking for something and had it open when I met him in his quarters one day. He closed it shortly after I got there, but I still saw them. I didn’t even tell him I knew.”

“Are you sure they were unopened? Perhaps you were mistaken,” Teyla suggested.

“No. No. You could tell. Some cards had the backs facing up…..they weren’t even touched. One even looked like the one you showed me the other month,” Rodney proudly said, adding insult to injury.

Keller let out a sigh, “I suppose if he doesn’t read them, then we shouldn’t even bother.”
Rodney’s smile got bigger, “Exactly!”

They all agreed to forgo the card and personally wish John a speedy recovery, as they began to head towards John’s quarters. Ronon excused himself from the group, saying he had a training lesson to teach in the gym.

As the crew entered John’s room, they saw the pain he was in as he slowly walked to his couch across the room.

“Did you take the pain medicine I gave you,” Keller asked. “You know you can alternate those with some Motrin.”

“Yep,” he replied with a grunt. “Just took one now. I was doing more that I should’ve and I’m feeling it now.” He settled himself in and gave a smile to the concerned looking faces. “So, should I assume you guys are here to give me my cards?”

“Um…” Keller began with a sound of hesitation. “We decided not to give you any this time…..because…” She was unsure what to say now.

“Because we know you don’t read them anyway,” Rodney jumped in.

John gave Rodney a curious look, “What are you talking about? Of course I read them. What made you think that?”

“Well, umm… because I saw them in your trunk.”

John rolled his eyes and motioned Rodney to go to his end table, “Get the key and check for yourself. Any unread cards you might have seen are from my brother, some cousins and one or two from Nancy.” He sounded insulted and none too pleased at Rodney.

Rodney began to head to the table until Teyla stopped him, “That will not be necessary, John.” Teyla gave Rodney a stern look. “It is none of our business and we all apologize. Is that not correct, Rodney?”

Rodney grumbled a yes under his breath.

“That’s ok…not a big deal,” he said with an understanding grin. “I’m sure you’ll have plenty of chances to get me another card in the future.” He rested his head on the back of his couch as his eyes started to look heavy and tired.

“I believe we should let you go and get some rest,” Teyla suggested.

John carefully got up and agreed as he headed towards his bed, “Thanks for coming over guys and don’t listen to Rodney next time…. I’m actually surprised you listened to him this time.”

Both Teyla and Keller apologized to John again. They looked to Rodney to wait for his, but they could tell from the determined, yet confused, look on his face that that was not going to happen.

“Ok,” Rodney retorted. “What did Teyla’s card say last time?”

“Rodney!” Keller and Teyla simultaneously responded.

John let out an amused chuckle, “She gave me a regular card, versus the ones she normally makes me. It had a surfer on it because she knows that’s one thing I like to do back on Earth… Oh! And it had a little drawing that Torren made that was mostly scribbles, but that’s ok….it’s the thought that counts.”

The girls once again rolled their eyes before saying their goodbyes and dragging Rodney out of the room, still babbling about what he had seen.

Later in the day, John is propped up in his bed as Ronon sat next to his beside, drinking a beer.

“So, why did you set up McKay again? Ronon asked with a grin as big as the Cheshire cat.

“Just for the fun of it. I hadn’t done anything like that in a long time. Took all I had to not give it away, “John replied with an equally mischievous grin.

“And do you really read the cards?”

John’s eyes squinted, “Eh, sometimes. Just had to refresh on a couple. Like Teyla’s. I knew he’d ask about hers…. He’s so predictable.”

“Wish I was there to see his face,” Ronon laughed.

“I wish you were too. The look on his face was priceless,” John bragged. “I forgot how fun it was. Definitely have to plan on doing this again….. Oh and thanks for the heads up about them coming. I barely had time to get all the cards back into my trunk.”

“Hey, anytime. Especially if it means busting on McKay.”

They both laughed and began to plan their next scheme.

The End.
