If Danny was aware of how deeply Naomi really cared for him, he'd never even bat an eye at her dreams of other men. It's true that once upon a time she had many friends in Somarium--Abel, Treize, Raiden, Vamp, Yoh, etc-- but every single one has up and left her alone besides Danny. Though she is still quite the social butterfly of the dream world, the woman doesn't trust a single one of her new friends as much as she used to trust the old. For all she knows, they will be gone by tomorrow, leaving her feeling emotionally drained and slightly betrayed.
But with Danny, it is completely and utterly different. They've exchanged their deepest secrets, comforted each other, argued, made up, been science buddies, family, coworkers, and cared for each other just as strongly as two people can for each other. The teenager provides her with a steady, interesting, and long-lasting friendship that she could never truly thank him for.
It means the world to her, just like he does.
She's been aware of his crush for months now, but even then, she would never use his feelings against him, not like she would with others. His words aren't just sounds either, she actually is greatly affected by what he thinks. He's a more than competent researcher and a great lab assistant that she hopes to have around working with her for years to come. She tends to praise his skills and intelligence to anyone who will listen, and while she'd like to credit herself on his brillance, she knows he'd have gotten there even without her.
He's also close friends with Frank which scores points like you wouldn't believe.
Of course, the adventure into AU certainly changed their dynamic together. Though she's always had a strong connection to the boy that developed into a maternal, protective, and loving side, Naomi now retains memories of actually being Danny's mother and how wonderful it was to call him her son. It was quite the blow to be told he wants nothing to do with her as a mother, he's far too attached to his own. Despite their usual ups and downs, the doctor is still deeply hurt to know the boy would leave Somarium without a second thought if he could.
Without Danny, she would truly feel alone, something she finds rather pathetic given that he is only a teenager.
