[Javert, who hasn't had a chance to view this dream until far later into the day, is quiet and thoughtful for some time, a deep, distracted grimace on his face. His lids are cast toward the floor. Something is bothering him. He cannot quite understand what he is seeing. He muses through his teeth,]
This Frank is the same as that boy with the soldier.
[Naomi's already picked herself up and moved into her lab with her second cup of coffee when Javert finally calls. She answers with a contented smile, looking far more happier than him over the dream.]
Yes, that's correct. I shouldn't be so surprised that you remember him.
[Javert lifts his eyes to hers, an eyebrow disappearing into his bangs. Considering the look on his face, his posture and tone of voice are exceedingly calm and aloof.]
[Naomi's grin only turns playful at the question. She knows exactly what Javert wants to hear from her, but that doesn't mean she'll just hand it over. When have things ever been so easy with her?]
[The only indication that Javert might feel any sensation of surprise can be seen in a tiny contraction of his left brow.]
Yet you get a boy-brother instead of a man. Miserable joke, isn't it? But that isn't surprising to me. It seems I have grown accustomed to the tricks of this place.
It is a pretty nasty joke, isn't it? I haven't even been born yet in the time he's from. [The smile is still in place, but there isn't nearly as much mirth in her expression any longer.]
Whoever holds control over these events appears to have a very sadistic sense of humor.
[This prompted a low, dry scoff and a lengthy pause from Javert, in which a strange expression briefly twists his face. It is as if his own thoughts have turned against him, a realization or single idea bearing down upon him, and he scarcely dreams of humoring these thoughts aloud. Dimly his face darkens with something like far-away suspicion.]
Perhaps.
[But then as quickly as it flashes, that expressive countenance is gone. He looks up and says very calmly and slowly, a curl at the corner of his mouth,]
It does strike me that he was an honorable fellow.
[At least, according to her dream. There may be more than a slight mismatch with reality. This is sure to bother him later, if he is ever to discover the extent of it.]
Well, you understand that you cannot undo it. And my curiousity is satisfied. I shall speak no more of it now. Will this matter bother you?
[Holding her hand about this issue does not seem like a very exciting prospect to Javert, particularly since he can find in him little empathetic or sympathetic understanding

[Naomi is just as silent during Javert's sudden halt in the conversation, her own dark eyes never once leaving his expression as she recognizes something very odd going on internally with him. As close as they may have become recently and as practiced as she is in reading him, there will always be parts of the man she can't quite fully understand. That little bit of mystery, however, is just another part of his appeal to her. It didn't need to be said aloud that having a man like the Inspector so closely connected to her life kept things from ever becoming boring.
There's the barest hint of an upturn at her mouth at the mention of her older brother being an honorable fellow. It's an exceptionally kind thing to say coming from him and she appreciates that little kindness right now.]
No, of course not. [Even if it were to bother or disturb her later on, Javert should know the woman well enough to realize that a topic this personal would be dealt with quickly on her own in private. Naomi may be willing to share a great deal more with

[That isn't exactly the answer she was hoping for, but Naomi knows it would be pointless to even attempt to argue. Javert is only performing the duties he's been assigned to. No one can be blamed for the sudden increase in crime the very week she wants to see him the most.]
I'll send Danny by later with lunch and dinner for you.
[She doesn't even bother telling him to not work so hard. He's already been overworked all week.]

So? [he prompts her in want of an explanation.]

So what?

[Javert rolls his eyes toward the ceiling, though the pinch at the corner of his mouth indicates some wry, ironic amusement.]
I don't see a resemblance, [he drawls, almost lazily.] What is your relation?

Frank's my older brother. [It doesn't need to be said, but she adds quickly,] Adopted, of course.

You do not fail to remind me that I must concentrate all of my effort into fattening myself for the holidays.
[He frowns.]
I grabbed something on my way.

And will you have time for a lunch break today?

Unlikely.

Tell him to leave the rest in the lounge refrigerator.

Will do. Continue fighting crime then.
