Consumer product review time!

Today I bought a half kilo pack of Home Brand Coffee Whitener. HBCW is a white powder substance that, when stirred into coffee - or presumably any hot liquid - approximates milk. I was dimly aware that such a thing existed, but had never thought it might be something I was interested in.

UNTIL NOW.

Ingredients:
Glucose Syrup Solids, Vegetable Fat, Milk Protein, Acidity Regulators (340, 451), Anti-caking Agent (554), Emulsifiers (471, 472e), Natural Colour (101).

Pros (vs. Milk):
- You can pretend you are living in some bizarre, tablet-meal consuming future world
- Does not require refrigeration
- Cheap (125 serves* for $3.25)
- Does not cool coffee (adding milk often makes my coffee cooler than I'd like, making me have to microwave it back up to my preferred temperature)
- Probably keeps pretty well
- Would be suitable for vegans, if it didn't have milk in it.

* = It's nicer if you use two teaspoons, rather the one teaspoon the pack recommends. Thus, more like 62.5 serves.

Cons (vs. Milk):
- Texture less 'milky'
- Colour too muddy
- Not quite as nice.

Conclusion:

This stuff is ok, though a more accurate name name might be 'Coffee Brownener'. I'm not sure if I would buy more if it was lost or stolen, and I probably wouldn't use it as long as I had milk around. Though as fridge space is tight within my household it might actually be in my interest to stop buying milk, eat breakfast at work, and use this in my coffee. You could probably mix it with water to make something not totally unlike milk; but that sounds gross and I don't want to try.

This would be good to stock in your fallout shelter as a handy source of carbohydrates and protein on the harsh post-apocalyptic Earth.
