Culture Shock

Oct 31, 2010 04:53

Apparently John wanted to do something "cultural" for a special date between him and Sarah next month, and all he could come up with was Joshua Bell, playing at Wigmore Hall on the 15th.

Oh, please. The man is limpid and uninspired. I completely understand those sad American travellers rushing through their capital city who couldn't be bothered to stop to listen to his butchery of Bach. It's obvious that he rarely practices.

Now, Catherine Manoukian on the other hand.... Her total approach to the violin is utterly inspired. I've never heard someone play so magnificently. Not only is her attack and bowing splendid, she goes back to the original transcripts and makes her own interpretations of them. Such intensity of feeling! Which is only natural, as she has studied the neuroscientific underpinnings of knowledge and emotion.

Ms Manoukian is an amateur in the truest sense of the word. (As in Gentlemen and Players, but you silly Americans wouldn't understand.)

I highly recommend her Chopin On Violin
, although her version of Le Trille Du Diable
is my favourite.
