A Note About Science Fiction

Apr 17, 2006 20:09

I was talking with my roommate awhile ago, and I realized something interesting about various weapons in science fiction stories. It seems that most sci-fi authors take the name of a standard weapon (like torpedo or cannon) and add a physics term in front. Examples include the "photon torpedo" from the Star Trek universe, and the similar "proton torpedo" and "ion cannon" from the Star Wars universe. This gives me an idea for a new game--create your own sci-fi weapon following this formula.

-Gauss cannon. Note: This item actually exists. It's another term for an electromagnetic coilgun, but it also appears as a weapon in several science fiction games.
-Faraday cage. Note: This item also exists. It's an enclosure built to exclude electromagnetic fields. It also sounds like a nifty, futuristic torture chamber.
-Tesla coil. Note: This is real, but also features in the Command and Conquer games.
-Feynman sphere. This one I made up. Who knows what this thing does!
-Watt missile. Steam powered missile that could have been used by H. G. Wells.
-Doppler gun. Could be a lethal sound weapon. Does not work in the vacuum of space, though.
