You just know nothing about any of the characters. And even what you find out about Squall is just gleaned...you don't ever have a sense of what it actually means for him (Hey look! After being an orphan I suddenly have a father! I know who my mother is! My girlfriend only exists because my father is a clumsy oaf! Hooray!). I don't even care about beating up Ultimecia...because what did she really do? Sephiroth killed my favorite character. Him I got mad at. Jecht is just devestating and complex as a "villain" (Although, arguably, there's a bit of handwaving as to Yu Yevon's and the Fayth's motives. FFX needs some epic pre-game backstory at some point. I'd play the Bevelle Zanarkand War.)
Squall also just comes off as self- absorbed and boring. Cloud I wanted to figure out, while Squall just confused me. That small scene in Galbadia Garden where he freaks out about people speaking gently about Seifer in past tense now that he's died...that's a healthy dose of angst that is rendered inexplicable because of the lack of context. It really is an interesting narrative choice to have a hero like that, but when Cid puts him in charge of everything every time I go..."Isn't there someone better qualified?" Kingdom Hearts succeeds because he has a modicum of charisma and you believe in him as a leader.
I forgot Triple Triad. Best. Thing. EVER. I could play that in real life.
Although I love FFVII more (it still genuinely excites me when I play it. To this day), FFX is far and away me second favorite...with very few exceptions the storyline is tightly knit, the characters are compelling (if you weren't just about sobbing by the end and shaking your fist at fate, you have no heart), and there were moments when I was genuinely surprised (Auron, I'm looking at you. Also, Yunalesca...although you beat me up a lot the first time I played...).
I'm either doing VI (which I've never played) or IX (which I remembered liking, but never finished). Everything looks better when compared to VIII though...
