While seeing all of the promotions for NBC's live "Sound of Music," it occurred to me that I have never actually seen "The Sound of Music." I am not sure how this is possible, as it is one of my mom's favorite movies, but I think it's one of her favorites to sing songs from, as opposed to watch start to finish on television or dvd.
So I knew some of the music, but did not have any clear picture of how the songs went together. I tried asking Kristen about it.
Joanna: So, there are Nazis in this musical?
Kristen: Yes.
Joanna: Is Captain Von Trapp a Nazi?
Kristen: What? No.
Joanna: I mean, the Nazis are bad guys, right? They wouldn't remake a Nazi musical where the Nazis are good guys.
Kristen: I am sure they would not.
Joanna: So, the guy who sings the male part of "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," is he a Nazi? Because that's a nice song. I don't think he should get t o sing a nice song like that if he is a Nazi.
Kristen: I think he delivers telegrams?
Other than my concern about Nazis, I would have summarized the plot, as understood by me, as:
Maria, the eldest daughter in a singing troupe called "The Von Trapp Family Singers," dances her way across the mountains with some nuns. And also, there are Nazis and yodeling.
Kristen: Maria is a nun. She is one of the nuns.
Joanna: But doesn't she get married? This is all very confusing.
I am filling this cultural void by watching the NBC production tonight. I have, so far, been wrong about most of the plot. Except the presence of mountains and nuns and singing.
