Evening Update
In an effort to defend its title as the third most corrupt State in the nation, Alabama recently anointed Larry Langford (D-Birmingham) as its latest poster child. Langford, accused of 101 accounts of conspiracy, bribery, fraud, money laundering and falsifying tax returns was indicted on 60 of those counts Wednesday. In all, Langford is accused of receiving some $236,000 and faces up to a maximum of 805 years in federal prison.
And here's where the story takes an ironic turn: Felon Sue Schmitz, (D-Toney) only laundered $177,251, roughly 2/3 of Langford's plunder. For her wrongdoing Schmitz was sentence the absolute minimum of a 30 month stay in America's finest crossbar hotels.
Yet no one (but me) is asking the tough questions: will Felon Larry Langford (D-Birmingham) and Felon Sue Schmitz (D-Toney) share a cell? Will there be conjugal visits betwixt the two? And will Langford write Letter from a Birmingham Jail, II?
There is a moral to this tale boys and girls: if you're going to steal money, it's best to do it in one whack because the penalty is less severe.
