spring break - part 1

shows i watched:

rent
good, esp. as far as musicals go.  this was the 1st show me and ken watched, we bought the matinee tix half off from a place in timesquare where they do that sort of thing, and it was good times.  as i watched it remembered what i said during 7th grade to brandon at some point which was that musicals are pornography for girls.

it's like, porno goes as follows:
terrible plot, horrible dialogue leading to a spectacular sex scene.  the dialogue is only brief and tries (and usually fails) to lead into the next sex scene.  but that's ok, because all you'll remember is the sex anyway.

a musical goes as follows:
terrible plot, horrible dialogue leading to a spectacular song and dance routine.  the dialogue between songs is brief and terrible and it's only function is to set up the next song, which is ok, because you don't really care about the dialogue of the plot, but the musical scores.

also at some point a girl with a nice ass showed it to us, which caused quite a commotion with an older lady sitting behind me to the tune of "can they do that?"  "they can't do that" "that is really irresponsible for them to do that"  give me a fucking BREAK.  it was an ASS.  i guess u never look at artwork either then, she'd prolly die if she saw David.

jewtopia - "A gentile's search for a jewish girl so that he never has to make another decision"

like the name?  it was hilarious, being someone who is moderately aware of jewish friends and the stereotypes, and i was accompanied by ken who is jewish and has jewish relatives.  there was a glossary of words like "mensch" ""schvitz" and a lot more for us "bad jews and gentiles."  (in the playbill, this is) .

the plot was that this gentile was pretending to be jewish and eventually converts to judaism to marry a jewish girl ___cohen.  i forgot her name.  anyway, at the same time, this jewish friend of his who goes way back is searching for a jewish girl to make his parents happy.  jewish guy helps gentile be more jewish.  gentile tells jewish guy he will help him date jewish girls.

"jewtopia" is actually jDate.com, and they create a few profiles with the jewish guy in different clothes and personas (Club Jew, Sports Fan Jew, Hasidic Jew and something else).  much clashing ensues and lots and lots of stereotypes are proven true by what i know (not any of the bad stereotypes) - including one that i found particularly hilarious after the show, when ken called his mom and said "i love you" at the end.  at which point we both looked at each other and 1) i started laughing like a hyena and 2) he realized how true the play was when it made a big point of jewish sons talking to their mothers a lot and always ending with "i love you" (of course played off the other side with the gentile who never calls his parents and has never said he loves them.)

it was really funny.  but the kicker was, that at the end of the play, they had a jDate.com event at the end of it!! like a singles mixer!  so hilarious.  everyone met in the lobby and went to some diner to mix.

who's afraid of virginia woolf

good play, martha played by kathleen turner, george played by some guy who acted a lot like niles crane.  i kinda want to read the play because some of george's lines were AWESOME.  martha's... not.  it was an entirely different crowd compared to the others, which i will now comment on.

on-broadway musical: good mix of people just looking for a good time (or satifying their carnal musical urges)
off-broadway play: people interested in what the play was specifically about, fun people
on-broadway play: people who don't understand SHIT - posers and jerks aplenty.  first of all, you know it's gonna be a doozy when kathleen turner came on to the scene the first time and people applauded.  siiigh.  then, they laugh WAY too loud at some of her lines that are NOT funny and in fact not the point of the joke where you're SUPPOSED to laugh.  they laugh because they don't understand what is being said, nor what is going on in the plot of the play at that point.  the only time they don't laugh is when they're supposed to, like when george lands a well-placed, more subtle zinger that causes ken and I and a few others to laugh uncontrollably and say "i am totally using that line from now on" - when that is said, they are silent.  not understanding that was the joke, or perhaps waiting for a more blunt and obvious zinger from martha.  WOW.

but i digress.  no i didn't, but anyway - good play, wanna read it now.

books i read:
a clockwork orange: good book, don't read the preface, it will make you realize the author is an elitist asshole, and discourage you from liking the book.
dave barry's guide to guys: fucking awesome. read it.  if u want a sampling, read chapter 4, then go back and read the rest of the book - intro and all.
cryptonomicon:not finished yet, as it is over 1000 pages long.   so far awesome.  i love the writing style and the wit, and the several intertwining plots.  could do with less math tho, but hey.

"honey would you please show her where we keep the... um... euphemism"
