Summary:Fred Buys Giles a roombot vacuum.

He held the contraption staring at it with utter confusion. “What is it?” He asked of Fred, Buffy, Xander, and just about anyone who would answer at his little Christmas Eve gathering.

“It’s a robot.” Fred was quick to offer- it was her gift to him after all. “I thought you might like a piece of cutting edge technology- and it’s also a vacuum.” As demonstration Winifred picked up a few bits of dried poperie and sprinkled it on the floor. She then removed the metal disk from the Watcher’s hands, flipped a switch, and set the object on the floor. Instantly the robot went to work vacuuming up the little bits of debris.

“I modified it a bit, it can actually sense dirt now and seeks it and sucks it up.” Her eyes were so huge, so desperate for approval.

“Wonderful.” Rupert replied finishing off his glass of scotch, “Simply wonderful.”

“Bloody brilliant.” Giles muttered kicking the silver disk with his foot. It skittered across the wood floor before starting up again, vacuuming up a trail of crushed chips.

“Don’t kick it.” Fred scolded bringing in a half empty tray of sandwiches to set on the kitchen counter. “If you don’t like it I can take it back but the roombot is just too expensive to break.” She was disappointed. Fred had hoped Giles would have liked his present but he seemed almost spiteful toward the robotic vacuum.

“No- it’s fine... very um… practical.” The watcher smiled and kissed the brunette on the lips his eyes still following the mechanical beast as it zipped around eating the fallen crumbs of food from the carpet. He was sure Fred would say it was the liquor talking but Giles knew that the robotic thing was evil and when she was gone he would set to work finding a way to destroy it.

After Winifred had gone to bed Giles became increasingly intoxicated- pacing around the apartment trying to think of what to do with the blasted contraption. It never stopped- following him from room to room seemingly mistaking him for a piece of dirt. He could not sit; if he did the object would attack his shoe and try to do away with his laces.

Alone he felt free to kick the object. A smile playing on his lips as it hurtled through the air. When it landed this time the light went off and the watcher felt, for the moment, as if he had claimed some small victory.

He opened the door to their bedroom and crawled into bed. ‘Man one’ the Ripper thought as he closed his eyes. ‘Machine zero.’

“Wake up..” Giles grinned as he was woken up with a kiss. “I made breakfast.” The older man took his time to get dress- reveling in his victory over the machine the night earlier. There was a light tapping on the door as the watcher buttoned his shirt.

“Coming!” he said expecting to see Fred on the other side but instead seeing the roombot- its engines revving.

“You!” He hissed getting ready to stomp the blasted creature when Winifred showed up.

“Giles if you don’t like it turn it off.” She insisted grabbing the item and flipping the switch. “I swear you worry me sometimes.” She added walking away with the disk in hand.

“Yes.. of course take its side.” He muttered bitterly closing the door and heading to the kitchen.
