While I'm at work, Schnurblecar is standing outside on a parking lot, the sun shining on it all day. So when I leave work, the car is heated up inside, and I usually drive the first few minutes with the side windows open to have the wind blow through it and get the hot air out.
I followed the same procedure yesterday, but when I shut the windows to let the air condition take over, instead of going up, the window on the driver's side only made some banging and bumping noises and then completely vanished in the door, where it didn't come out again. Apparently, the thing that holds the window pane and lifts it up and down had broken. Grrr. The knowledge that this is a well known issue for Golf IV cars with electric window lifts, and that this had already happened to the window on the other side two years ago, so I exactly knew what was wrong, was no real consolation.
While driving with an open window is not too unpleasant on a warm summery day, a window you can't shut gets a little bit inconvenient when you want to leave the car out on the street. So I drove directly to ATU, and managed to get in there shortly before they closed. Unfortunately they couldn't fix it right there because this is a bigger task to repair it, and they were already closing, but at least they checked that they had everything they needed for the repair on stock and made an appointment for today. They also gave me a big plastic bag that I could try to fix over the window-hole to seal Schnurblecar against the rain that was expected to come at night.
But I didn't use the bag. After I came home, Hubby and I fiddled around for a while until we managed to get some duct tape into the slit where the window pane had vanished, fastened it on the pane (as good as this was possible, with the slit being so tight that only the first two joints of my fingers could go in...) and then pulled it out veeery carefully, so we finally got hold of the window pane. We raised it up completely and fixed it with duct tape in a shut position to the doorframe.
Since there was indeed a heavy thunderstorm with torrential rain last night, this was definitely the better solution; I doubt that the plastic bag would have withstood the storm and rain.
This morning I left Schnurblecar at ATU, and drove to work with a colleague, who'll also bring me back to ATU after work, so I can pick up Schnurblecar then.
