The Japanese Mother Complex

I am currently reading Princess Masako - Prisoner of the Chrysanthemum Throne...

...which is a semi-biography of - who else? - the Crown Princess Masako. I am already at the part where Empress Michiko was said to raise the Crown Prince Naruhito on her own, instead of depending on an army of servants (as was the custom of the Imperial family since ancient times), where I read the following paragraph:

...[In Japan,] fathers typically play very little part in the upbringing of their children, leading to a phenomenon psychologists nickname mazakon - an abbreviation of the Japlish phrase mazaa konpurekkusu or 'mother complex'. Children, particularly boys, who develop these intense relationships with their mothers tend to be overly dependent and to have difficulty forming relationships with other women. In extreme cases, a survey in the 1980s found that some Japanese mothers treated their boys to sexual favours as a reward for studying hard.

And now I am all O.o WTF

Belated Merry Christmas, y'all!
