So after many recommendations, I finally saw The Fall.
This is, by far, the best film.
Simply breath-taking.
The cinematography is immaculate. Almost every frame could function as an independent still shot and be considered great photography. The colours, shapes, scenery and movement are all so intricate and exact, proportioned and intentional, and vibrant to the point of being hyper-real.
The music and sound are used to great effect to compliment the visual, though are still beautiful in their own right.
The story is cleverly layered. Some of the narrative techniques may be familiar but remain fresh and are skilfully utilised. The strength of the script is clearly evident when actors are deliberately melodramatic or have troubled with the English language.
The emotional scope of the film is as broad as the geography, themes and imagination therein.
Simply, this film resets the scale for cinema.
