This all gels with my experience of food on the west coast. The supermarkets were somewhat baffling and processed/packaged goods are the staple over there it seems, with a small section cordoned off for organic vegetables (although, this was in 2005 so that cordoned off area may have exploded into a much larger area ( ... )

I knew our food was pretty shit but it took having some people come in from out of the country to see how truly shit it is. I ate so much junk when I was there but you can't eat like that all the time--you'll get sick and cranky and fat. We poison our food with so many additives and preservatives, we process it to death. Being healthy here and eating properly takes money and effort--you want good things, you have to pay extra for them (usually) and you have to prepare meals yourself. Many people don't have the time or inclination to do that, so they just grab what's cheap and available.

I've been thinking about this quite a bit since I left Monday and within one day of going back to my regular "diet" of natural foods, I feel loads better. I'm sorry, America, but with food, you are an EPIC FAIL.

Thanks for the post, it's good to get an unbiased opinion about this!

Thing is, I was showing the worst of American food (with a few good things thrown in). Truth be told, Melbourne kicks arse over America's food - we're really spoilt in Australia. I think you get a pretty good idea of what American food is made of (and they're doing it wrong).
