Last night I saw an incredible show. It was the kind of show that had me smiling, clapping and screaming from beginning to end. It was so uplifting that I got 6 hours of sleep and woke up feeling fantastic...still riding the high from last night.
It was so good that John and I are now planning to go to the Oingo Boingo tribute thing on Fri 10/26 to hear Brendan & Steve Bartek play again. They had fantastic chemistry and you could see that they really respect each other and have FUN playing together. Last night, Brendan (aka BT4) and Steve were joined by Martin Yarbrough on percussions and Carl, a kick ass dude on the upright bass. The arrangements were fantastic and these musicians were on a totally different level. This was by far the most talented band that's backed him, imo.
They played some of my old favorites: Jeremiah Dines Alone, Heartbreak in LA, She Dreams (Brendan did this as a solo encore and I captured it on video!)...
And some of my new favs: Let's Get Hitched, Blue Curacao, Do It Twice ...
And a brand new song: Olivia...
And a beautiful Oingo Boingo cover: Can't See (Useless)
I was am so proud of Brendan and how far he's come. I'd seen him perform over a dozen times since he and my brother became Japanese class buddies at USC during their freshman year. I think he produced his first CD in his dorm room, playing most of the instruments on his keyboard. It was pretty raw, but extremely ambitious and creative. The first performances I saw of him were at USC, The Whiskey, parking lots or my sister's apartment in Long Beach. And I just realized that I've never heard him play with the same band twice. In fact, I've rarely heard him play the same style of music more than once, though he sticks to a play list of about 20 BT4 fan favorites. He's been know to play a loud, screaming, punk rock set one month and then a pop set the next and then he'll ditch his band and do an acoustic show sitting on a stool. So I'm a little nervous that what I heard last night was a once in a lifetime experience. BT4 has a show coming up on Nov 16 at Ghengis Cohen, and hopefully the same band will return. I'd get super stoked if he recorded some tracks with these guys tho!

Also, the BSG Season 3 soundtrack is coming out next week and it will include the Bob Dylan cover "All Along the Watchtower" that BT4 did for the season finale. yay!
