Maddie and I went on A Big Adventure today. I was tired of our usual walk around the neighborhood, so I loaded her into the truck. This is not as easy as it sounds since she is about 8 inches tall and wieghs 35 pounds. She does do the "saddle up" command, which means she will put her front legs on the running board (as far as she can make it by herself) and wait to be hoisted in. It's easier to get her in and out of my car, but she likes riding in my car even less than she likes riding in the truck. She is a dog who only tolerates car rides because they usually end up at the park. Also, she insists in riding backwards, butt facing forward. I've never been able to figure that out.

Anyway, we headed off to the East Bank Esplanade, which I've never actually walked before. We walked from the Hawthorne Bridge to the Burnside Bridge and back. Wow, the noise from the freeway was LOUD. It spooked Maddie a bit, but she calmed down after a while. She was completely spooked by the cyclists zipping right by her, though. I don't think she's ever really experienced bikes that way before. It especially scared her when they would come whizzing past her from behind. But she learned pretty quickly to stay very close to me. As usual, we were stopped several times by people wanting to pet her, comment on or ask about her breed, and we even had a family ask to take pictures of her today. She was happy to oblige, because she's a little attention whore. If she were offered a reality show, she'd do it in a hot second.

After our walk, we made a pitstop at Bunk for a sandwich for later, which in spite of its odd name has been getting great reviews, and we happened to be nearby. We got there shortly before 3:00 and the line was out the door. It didn't take that long though and my sandwich (roast beef, white cheddar, carmelized onions and horseradish sauce) was indeed delicious. Then it was on to the Lucky Lab Brew Pub, where we sat on the back patio and I had a beer and read the paper and Maddie had a bowl of water and ate potato chip crumbs off the floor.

Back home, I was sitting at the computer trying to decide whether to see Gran Torino or Doubt this afternoon when, at exactly 3:45pm, I realized that GAH! I had told my friend Jen that I would volunteer at the the Northwest Down Syndrome Association conference this afternoon. I was supposed to be there at 4:00. I went flying out the door and got there at 3:59. Phwew. I'm SO glad I didn't space on that. That's the worst feeling, realizing after the fact that you were supposed to be somewhere. I didn't actually do all that much, because there wasn't much to do, but at least I was there, ready to help, and didn't flake.

Tomorrow I'm going to spend a few hours at the Humane Society, doing Cat Socialization. I haven't been there since last weekend, because according to their weekly "Noseletter" they mostly need Cattery volunteers on the weekend. And probably see a movie. Maybe pull some weeds, although our yard waste bin didn't get picked up this week. It's picked up every other week, and I never remember which week, so I watch the neighbors. If I see another green bin out, I put ours out. However, I am beginning to suspect that none of us know when it is and we all do the same thing. "Honey, Casey put his bin out! It must be the week!" But in reality, Casey only put his bin out because he saw Jose put his out, etc. And then they sit there, and we wonder who started this particular game of bin roulette. I never knew it was going to be this much fun to be an adult suberb dweller!
